Discourse Communities Discourse communities are what bring people together into groups, for example; their beliefs, use of language, foods, work, etc. As I grew older I became to be more involved with different types of communities. From joining my church choir group when I was an eighth grader to working at my recent job (Alameda Tax Service). As I stated in my first sentence a discourse community can have a specific type of language. Not necessarily from another state, but it can be a different type of slang that you would usually use. A discourse community can be as simple as the group of friends you hang out with, because of the slang or language you guys use when you are together. Joining my church choir and talking to everyone there was completely different than speaking with my parents, my friends, and talking to people at my job. While we rehearsed, it was all about talking about our musical notes, when we were going to have high notes, high pitches, low notes, etc. Our language was based on music and religion. We would sing about god, our saints, our virgin, and anything that was church related. When we would just get together and not rehearse we would usually talk about church and talk about the bible. Being in different communities makes you realize that almost any place you hang out in, everyone that is involved somehow makes the place where you hang out, a discourse community. The reason for this is because you may use a different language; eat different foods than you usually do when you are at some other place rather than the place you are at, at the moment. My work is part of another one of the communities I am in. What makes my work a discourse community is the language we speak during work hours.
