Devotion vs. Forbidden Love Jane Doe Introduction to Literature Instructor March 9, 2013 Devotion vs. Forbidden Love When is comes to literary writings, many writers express their view on relationships from many different cultures and this is what the writers try to portray in their stories. We are going to analyze two different writings “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant and “Country Lovers” by Nadine Gordimer, focus on two completely different types of relationships in completely different times and places, but show that the couples in both stories want to be in love. The short story “The Necklace” that was written by Guy de Maupassant that was a French author of the naturalistic school who is generally considered the greatest French short story writer. (The Literature Network) In the story “The Necklace” is set in Paris and tells a story about a devoted husband who wants to do whatever he can to make his wife happy. He knows his wife dreams of being a member of upper-crust society, but he can’t afford it: “A young couple discovers that the upper society appears to glitter like a real necklace, but in reality it may not always be so; they learn that a decision that appears to protect their integrity in reality shows a lack of integrity—like a false necklace does. These ironic insights create drama, reveal character, and produce surprise.” (Clugston, 2010) The author describes in great detail how Mathilde feels like she was “kept out of her own class” (Clugston, 2010) because she wasn’t born into a family with a lot of money. The author shows the symbolism when he wrote about how her husband manages to wrangle an invitation to a special night out.
