Development of New England and Chesapeake Regions

Religion shaped the development of the colonial society from the 1600’s to the 1700’s. The New England and Chesapeake people left Europe for different reasons. New England had initially created their society swiftly and it was easier for them compared to the Chesapeake region. This is because their religion and what they believed brought them together as a team or community so they could meet their goals, and both are successful in the end. They both had differences and reasons for leaving Europe, religion and beliefs. First they had different reasons for leaving Europe to come to America. The Chesapeake colonists left Europe for land, gold and fortune. The New England colonists left Europe for religious freedom. So they could worship as they wished, which they didn’t have in Europe. They wanted a close knit Christian community. They both left for different reasons, and they have a similarity in this difference. They both came so they could live their lives better and how they wanted to live them. Second the Chesapeake region did bring religion with them; however that was second on their list. The Chesapeake colony largely consisted of Anglicans and English Catholics. (Anglicans are a Protestant religion) The Chesapeake people had religious tolerance still there were tensions in order to have other religious dominations within the same colony. Protestants outnumbered the English Catholics; so the fights for religious dominance were mainly between Catholics and Protestants. New England was Puritan Separatists’. Puritans are a serious and a pious people. They strove to lead useful, conscientious lives of thrift and hard work and they honored material success as evidence of God’s favor. Only church members could vote. The Government was run by the church, due to this, people left the area because they couldn’t choose how they wished to worship. The New England
