Show Respect What is respect? The dictionary defines it as an act of giving particular attention or high or special regard. Respect has great importance in everyday life. Respect means a lot of different things. On a practical level it seems to include taking someone’s feelings, needs, thoughts, ideas, wishes and preferences into consideration. We might also say it means taking all of these seriously and giving them worth and value. Respect can be shown through behavior and it can also be felt. We can also feel respect for someone and feel respected by someone. As a child I was taught to respect my parents, teachers, and elders. Today, many young people go about showing respect in all the wrong ways. This can often diverse from lack of motive and self-esteem. The concept of respect has many different meanings. Respect is something everyone wants, not many have, and few want to give. Most people would appreciate just a little bit, and most should give just that. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, this does not happen. Maybe it’s because the concept of respect is not understood. Of anyone that I have met in my life, my mother has all the respect I could give a woman. My mother has taught me through life that if I respect a person, I will get farther than if I didn’t. When one respects their parents, it’s a whole lot easier to learn from them. Respect is something that’s earned and your parents earn that respect by providing it. Self-respect to me means respecting myself above all else. I t means honoring my values and principles before anyone and anything else. It means trusting myself to say and do only what feels true and honoring. Listening to and respecting that precious little voice inside when it feels a little fearful or unsettled. Sometimes respecting me can make other people angry, frustrated, disappointed, and hurt because they want to be
