Jimmy Cross was the leader for the group of soldiers and he carried with him letters and a good luck pebble from a girl named Martha who he loved though. “They were not love letters” (O’Brien 117). But each soldiers also carried different emotions that determined who each one was as a person. All of the soldiers carried death in their mind and they pretended that death was not real and. “They were actors and the war came at them in 3-D” (O’Brien 126).
It is seen when Lewis is introduced, his views on love are very similar to that of his girlfriend Lucy and best friend Nick. He does not hold much value on fidelity due to the importance of the Vietnam War in his life. Lewis expresses to the patients that “love is not so important nowadays.” It is through the play itself, “Cosi Fan Tutte: Women are like that”, a play about “test[ing]..girls fidelity”, that Lewis reevaluates his opinions and values and learns to form his own. Lewis changes to having a more traditional view on romance and is able to accept that it is important in relationships. This change in Lewis is apparent when he describes the opera as being about “important things, like love and fidelity” and when he reacts genuinely hurt to when he discovers that his girlfriend Lucy has been having sex with Nick.
Independent Reading Journal Title: The title ‘Soldier’s Heart’ is a phase used by Americans to label Civil War veterans who seemed mentally lost because of the war. The title Soldier’s Heart best suits the book because it has an emotional and intense sounding to it and is based on a true story. Characters/Characterisation: At the beginning of the text Charley Goddard is excited and is eager to go fight for the Union. He didn’t know what a shooting war meant or what it was all he knew was that he didn’t want to miss out on a great adventure. Near the end of the book Charley Goddard life had changed he fought for survival.
I recommend this book because it not only gives you a look into the life of a grunt, but also into the most recent war America has been involved in. Danelo’s book is also a very good book with a lot of action that will keep your heart pounding if you are into the book. Although no one will ever understand what kind of brother ship these men have and how to be a leader under immense stress, reading this book will give a better understanding to the reader. If I had to rate Danelo’s “Blood Stripes” on a scale from one to ten based the detail of information given and the deciphering of war into words then I would give this book a perfect score and recommend it to anyone that is looking for a good book to
Hakeem is faced with another tough situation because he wants to keep his uncle happy but doesn’t want to get onto Savons bad side so he is lost with what to do. Overall I think this theme re occurs in this book many times to make the ending seem a lot greater than it actually is, to an average person they wouldn’t think anything of it. The term “if I should die” was probably a used phrase when the soldiers were writing letters to their loved ones. This poem captures the attitudes of the time of much patriotism. The men were willing to sacrifice themselves for England and dying with happy hearts. The beginning of the war was not as volatile so the view on the war was very calm and collective. The enthusiasm of winning the war and the confidence that it would be over by Christmas was very high.
George and Lennie represent the former group, for whom we can feel sympathy, while Curley is a character with whom it is hard to sympathize. The writer presents Lennie as large and strong, but mentally slow, while his guardian George is physically less capable but mentally much brighter. As soon as we hear that they are constantly having to travel the country for work, because of Lennie’s past mishaps, we feel sorry for them. We sympathize with Lennie, because what happened in Weed, for example, was not really his fault; and we feel sorry for George because he has to cope with the responsibility, if not the burden, of trying to find a way for them both to survive and to stay out of further trouble. Steinbeck invites the reader’s sympathy, in the scene where they camp overnight before going to the ranch.
