Piaget said as children develop they acquired cognitive structures, which are mental representation to understand and interacting with their own environment. This is done through the use of schemas. In a simpler way, schemas are actions or mental representations that organize knowledge by Santrock (2008). Infants are born with certain innate schemas, for instant grasping schema. Nevertheless as children acquire more information the schema tend to become more and more complex. Such as, having a schema to remember and to solve problems. Once a child is in equilibrium, they are supposed to have understood everything they have learnt. When they come across information that they are not conversant with, then they would use a schema to accommodate and assimilate the information so that it would get back into the state of equilibrium. Assimilation is the process where new information is modified in other to fit the existing schema; whiles accommodation is the procedure by which the existing schema has to be modified to fit the new information. Piaget four stages of cognitive development. The first stage is the sensori-motor stage, it happens between 0-2 years. An important feature of this stage of development is object permanence, this is the idea that the object do not disappear when they are out of sight or mind.
