Piaget’s theory of learning is sometimes referred to as a constructivist approach because he suggested that children constructed or built their thoughts according to their experiences of the world around them. Piaget used the term ‘schema’ to refer to a child’s conclusions or thoughts. He felt that learning was an ongoing process, with children needing to adapt. Piaget’s belief that children develop schemas based on their direct experiences can help us to understand why young children’s thinking is sometimes different from ours. Piaget also suggested that, as children develop so does their thinking.
While Piaget’s cognitive theory consists of four stages (sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational) that children go through as they grow, McCrink and Wynn proposed a different theory of cognitive development. They developed a deeper theory suggesting that children are able to understand object permanence at an earlier age, 5-6 months, because they are able to track objects, or at least a very small limited amount at a time (McCrink & Wynn, 2004). This is because infants can remember and file objects in memory of the few objects that exist before them. Children in the sensorimotor stage absorb the word with their actions and their five senses: touch, taste, smell, hear and see. They begin to see that their movements have an effect on their environment.1b. Object permanence is the mindfulness that objects remain to exist even when the object is out of sight. The absence of object permanence in infants younger than 8 months is explained by their still developing brains, and their incapability to remember events. Object permanence emerges because their brains are more capable to hold memories for longer periods of time, and their memories are less fragile.

Children’s development is continuous, so it is important to look at the sequence and rate of each aspect of development as a way of monitoring their progress. Although children develop in many different ways and at many different rates, the sequence that they follow is understood to be roughly the same. Piaget's Theory According to Piaget, children in the earliest stages of life, from birth to 2 years, exist in a sensory-motor stage, where they learn to move and operate their bodies as well as begin to understand simple symbols. In this early stage, children are curious about their environment and begin to learn how to interpret it in sensible ways. The next stage is called preoperational thought and lasts from the ages of 2 until 7. In this stage, children develop stable concepts, mental reasoning and imagination. What is distinct and important about Piaget's views is that he considered imagination and play to be crucial to enable every child to develop his own sense of self and to foster healthy learning habits.
The major areas of development include biological, cognitive and social and emotional development. Both of these psychologists were concerned with the study of understanding the area of cognitive development specifically in children and were considered to be constructivists. Constructivism is the theory in which “learners actively construct their own knowledge based upon the things they know now and have known in the past” (TFL resources, 2006). This essay will seek to compare and contrast the theories of psychologists Piaget and Vygotsky and will critically look at their theories to judge which aspects are appropriate for the long term. A lot of resources will refer to intellect as the ability to learn or reason. Piaget was particularly interested in this area in relation to the cognitive development of the child.
