Sometimes a name says it all. In the case of the name for the U.S. government’s agency that helps to protect its citizens, the Department of Homeland Security leaves no doubt as to its purposes. The homeland it is directed to protect is the United States, and some of the areas it covers are natural disasters, immigration, information technology, and its top priority prevention of a terrorist attack. But a name does not do the hard work, it is the people and organization that must live up to the loftiness of its name. Fortunately, so far, the Department of Homeland Security has kept its homeland relatively secure. According to their website, the Department of Homeland Security was established after the attacks on September 11, 2001 by terrorist. The main purpose and key mission of the Department of Homeland security is to safeguard the United States against terrorism. This is done with the coordination of other federal agencies such as the CIA and the FBI. As of February 17, 2012, according to the Heritage Foundation’s website, forty-five terrorist plots have been thwarted. These responsibilities include regulating and enforcing immigration laws and deportations. To get an understanding of how daunting a task it is securing the borders, the number of people deported in fiscal year 2012, that ended in September is telling. During that time, 393,000 people were deported. There is criticism from those that believe people here without authorization should not be deported unless they have committed relatively serious offenses.
