Dental Spa Mini Case

Dental spa services are opening in major cities throughout the United States. A dental spa is essentially a service dedicated to mitigating the anxiety surrounding one of the most uncomfortable places to be: the dentist’s office. Many people, especially those who do not diligently take care of their teeth must go through painful and uncomfortable dental procedures at least twice a year, if not more. A dental spa is exactly what it sounds like: a dentist which has spa-like properties. If clients don’t like hearing the noise from the dental drill, they can place the noise-cancelling headphones over their ears. Other clients can have a manicure, pedicure, or foot scrub while they are getting their teeth worked on. Spa services are very complementary with dentistry as dentistry itself can be a very cosmetic procedure (Alsever, 2006). When new services are introduced to the market, three general factors must be considered: the similarity to current services, the similarity to current processes, and the financial justification for the new service. Spa services are very complementary to dental services as both essentially require the customer to stay very still while they’re being worked on. Whether someone is having their mouth worked on or their feet worked on, the similarity in services is very close. The financial justification is there as many people avoid going to the dentist because of how uncomfortable it makes them feel. By adding in spa services, dentists are more likely to gain new clientele and are able to upcharge their existing clientele. The largest pitfall for a dentist attempting to add spa services to their portfolio would be the operational fit, or the similarity to existing processes. Even though spa service seem like a logical extension to dental services, they are vastly different from what dentists know and how they run traditional practices.
