Assignment 1 Written Report 1 A. Define homeostasis. (1 mark) Homeostasis regulates the human body. This happens by communicating with the receptors, control centre and the effectors. This is all essential for the body to function normally. B. Distinguish between the terms atom, ion, and molecule. (3 marks) An atom is the smallest of electrons and can take part in chemical reactions. Atoms consist of a positively charged nucleus with negatively charged electrons surrounding it. An ion is an atom or group of, that have lost an electron or more, making it even more charged and more reactive. A molecule is a particle of two or more atoms held by chemical bonds. Its the smallest of units and exists independently. C. Define the term nutrient, and outline the main groups of nutrients. (6 marks) Nutrients are what the body takes in through food and liquids. It contains chemicals used to feed cells for cell building and also gives us energy to do the things we love. The main groups of nutrients are: Carbohydrates- these are important for energy to keep us going. Lipids- they enter the body as a fat. Fibre- this keeps our body regular and functioning normally. Vitamins- these are organic nutrients the body need in small amounts. Minerals- the body needs adequate amounts of 7 minerals (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, sodium, chloride and magnesium) D. Name 5 organs inferior to the clavicles and describe the function of each in only one sentence. (5 marks) 5 organs inferior the clavicles are: Lungs- these help us to breathe but extracting carbon dioxide through the walls of the lungs. Heart- this pumps clean blood around our body to help us survive. Kidneys- the kidneys flush out all the bad nutrients from our body and produces urine. Liver- this is where bile is produced and leaves through here. Stomach- It continues the digestion
