The women in the novel of mice and men Aunt Clara - Lennie’s aunt, who cared for him until her death, does not actually appear in the work except at the end, as a vision chastising Lennie for causing trouble for George. By all accounts, she was a kind, patient woman who took good care of Lennie and gave him plenty of mice to pet Curley’s wife - The only female character in the story, Curley’s wife is never given a name and is only mentioned in reference to her husband. The men on the farm refer to her as a “tramp,” a “tart,” and a “looloo.” Dressed in fancy, feathered red shoes, she represents the temptation of female sexuality in a male-dominated world. Steinbeck depicts Curley’s wife not as a villain, but rather as a victim. Like the ranch-hands, she is desperately lonely and has broken dreams of a better life.
Curley’s wife is always looking for her husband. In doing this she is showing that she is lonely because she is looking for attention. Curley’s wife is lonely because she isn’t getting attention from Curley, so she flirts with other men. Along with Curley’s wife being flirtatious because she is lonely, she also talks to people about being lonely. When Lennie is in the barn because he killed the puppy Curley’s wife walks in and starts talking to Lennie.
Curley’s wife would always try to show more of herself, and of course the reaction of the men was to call her a “tramp” and a “rat trap”. This is also subtly changing the readers view. We can see that all the men on the Ranch feel the same way about her. Steinbeck almost puts you in the position of Lennie and George, so whenever she insults them, so also insults you, further exaggerating what you feel about Curley’s wife. For example, when she says “They left all the weak ones here” all the men ignore her to let her know that she isn’t wanted, and Crooks tells her to get out.
He thinks that Candy’s dog should be shot because it is old and smelly, he persistently argues to shoot the dog, an example is when he says “Well, I can’t stand him in here” and “and he stinks to bear hell. Tell you what. I’ll shoot him for you. Then it won’t be you that does it.” He suggests that Candy could have one of Slim’s puppies instead, but he does not recognise that Candy has an emotional attachment to his dog. After he shoots the dog, he does not apologise to Candy and he even cleans his gun in full view of everyone, this shows that he is an insensitive character.
Some men just suddenly jumped off the window and others just ran out of the mansion screaming. This had made Penelope sad and felt like giving up but her mother told her and made her understand that she doesn’t have to worry because her piggy appearance was not hers, it was her great grandfather’s nose and ears. A man named Vanderman, one of the man who took flight at first sight teamed up with Lemon(a tabloid reporter who spent his life stalking Wilhern family and had seen Penelope when she was a baby) to reveal and prove to everyone that they are not crazy and
After that Lennie is killed, shattering all hopes and dreams George had, as well as ending a long term relationship. ‘why’n’t you shoot him, Candy?’, during the 1930’s America was going through ‘The Great Depression’ everything that people lived on were hopes and dreams because people had nothing else to keep them going but the determination to fulfill the American dream ; power, fame and fortune. The murder of the one dog created a domino effect which shattered dreams, took away lives and ended relationships. The death of the puppy could foreshadow the ending of Curley’s wife, ‘a little dead puppy that lay in front of him’, the puppy was small helpless and delicate as was she. Both could not manage the power of Lennie and both ended up on the hay dead and alone ‘Curley’s wife lay with a half covering of yellow hay.
But when he shoots his best friends, he also kills his future dream and furthermore his idea of an idyllic brotherly world. When all the men are into town, the outcasts of the ranch meet in Crooks’s room. Crooks, who is black, Lennie, who is a bit retarded, Candy, who is old and finally Curley’s Wife, who is a woman. The characters that gather in this scene are all different from the other people on the farm; however, it is in four different ways. In this scene it becomes clear, that it is human to demolish the ones who are weaker than oneself in order to feel more powerful.
So Lily ran away with Rosaleen to go find a place where she thought her mother had been. She left her miserable life back at home so she can fine things out about her mom and start a new life. The bee community is similar to the human community in so many ways in how the colony is not the same when the queen is no longer there and how they leave to start fresh again just like the human community but yet the are so different. The bees and the characters can relate to each other in many ways. When the Queen is missing from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence.
He doesn’t wan to see the vacuum working.] And the woolen mice, and begin to howl [Woolen mice: Large dust balls. When the vacuum works it makes this loud noise like howling] Because there is old filth everywhere [The place is consumed with dirt] She used to crawl in the corner and under the stairs [Crawl: walking on hands, knees and toes In other words, she cleaned everything!] I know now how life is cheap as dirt [Is a simile for: life has no meaning now he lost his wife] And still the hungry, angry heart [Hungry cause he miss and long for her, and he’s angry at the loss. When you loose something often you are angry] Hangs on and howls, biting at air [His heart howling and biting, is a metaphor.
The farmers believe that wolves are killing their sheep. That is true, in some cases the wolves are killing their sheep, but the farmers’ claims go unchallenged! I do not want to say that they are lying, but in fact one wolf during the year can kill about eight sheep. By way of comparison, over forty sheep die each hour during the summer without any interference by the predators. They die from reasons like parasites, poisoned plants, illnesses and injuries.
