Right realists believe that crime is not a social construction as other theories such as the labelling theory believe they believe it is a real problem. Official statistics show an increase in violence against the person’s offences of 1% and an increase of 25% in sexual offences against girls. Right realists state crime destroys communities as well as threatens work ethic in today society, this view is shared with neo conservatives. High Crime in Urban Areas Travis E. Heath SOC 305 Crime & Society Timothy Knox 5 November 2012 Abstract Crime and our criminal justice system affect everyone in the United States in one way or another, weather you are a criminal or the victim. Impoverished urban areas with a large minority population are disproportionally impacted. Through my research I discovered that a higher number of violent and drug related crime occur in theses areas. I also found that studies show that people within minority groups are more likely to suffer hasher punishment for similar crimes committed by non-minority groups. In this research paper I will analyze the break down the officially recognized races in the US, crimes specifically relate to these urban areas that are not present in more rural and suburban areas, finally how are crimes handled both at the judicial and executive levels in poverty-stricken communities as opposed to upper class communities.
Anomic theory is considered a sociological theory that tries to explain the pattern of crimes through macro level of analysis. Criminals commit crime on the basics that abnormal conditions and their surroundings cause them to have to act on it. There have been assumptions that poor commit more crimes than others. Based on several analysis crime are generally committed based on needs rather than wants. Anomie theory provides an explanation of the concentration of crime.
Symbolic interactionism first emerged in the 1930s and began to grow around the 1960s. Unlike conventional functionalist criminology who are methodologically positivistic and rely on the Official Crime statistics as social facts, Interactionists views OCS as a social construction compiled by the police, courts and Criminal Justice System. Interactionists take a micro approach when studying crime and deviance as they are particularly interested in the studying individuals in society the process of interaction to discover why certain groups are more susceptible to deviancy than others. The term labelling theory derives from Interactionism which argues that individuals are presented with different labels, some of which are stigmatized such as a delinquent. This is the work of Becker who argues “Deviancy is not a quality of the act a person commits but rather a consequence of the application by others of rules and sanctions to an ‘offender’.
Offender profiling is the collection of empirical data in order to compile a picture of the characteristics of those involved (Howitt 2002). Offender profiles aim to narrow down the range of possible suspects rather than solve the actual crime (Dwyer 2001). Holmes suggests that profiling is most useful when the crime scene reflects psychopathology e.g. sadistic assaults, and 90% of profiling attempts involve murder or rape. Holmes and Holmes 1996 suggested that there are three goals to offender profiling; social and psychological assessments of the offender, psychological evaluation of their belongings, and interviewing suggestions and strategies.
Examining Theory Paper Michael Kilgore CJS/314 August 11, 2014 Jennifer Duncan Examining Theory Paper Social structure theories are theories that describe criminal behavior in people. These theories have been in place for many years to help decipher the many things that paly a hand in the people committing crime. Social theories examine both the institutional arrangements within a social structure, social processes, and social life (Schmalleger, 2012). There are three main social theories, social disorganization theory, strain theory, and cultural conflict theory. These theories are different in determining factors that cause criminal behavior.
Is concern over youth crime a moral panic? Answer with reference to recent policy changes. The concept of societal concern over ‘youth crime’ is nothing new, from Victorian ‘street urchins’ to the modern day ‘yob’. Crime however comes in various forms from extreme acts of murder to minor vandalism or drug use, given how varied crime can be it would appear also that some crime is given more focus than others. This was first brought attention to by Stanley Cohen’s book ‘Folk Devils and Moral Panics’ (1972), he pointed out that some crime is given more attention and exaggerated so the societal response is likewise.
Social Structure Theory Sue Benitez CJA/314 April 1, 2013 Renee Grengs Social Structure Theory Social Structure Theory is “a theory that explains crime by reference to the economic and social arrangements in society. This type of theory emphasizes relationships among social institutions and describes the types of behavior that tend to characterize groups of people rather than individuals” (Schmalleger, p. 151). Julio Rivera’s murder in the video “Senseless Hate Crime” can be acknowledged and studied using a social structure theoretical application. The following will explain how the video supports the theory, will explain what social issues were raised, and will show what some of the possible ramifications will be for social policy change. There are three major types of Social Structure Theory; Social Disorganization, Strain Theory, and Culture Conflict Theory.
A good term for this is called “Social Desirability Bias” which means that you reply in a manner that is socially acceptable and desirable. The main purpose of this study is to allow the participants to describe the crimes in their own words instead of implying from observing participants. Honesty in these self-report studies help many different groups to better understand crime and criminal behavior. They use these reports to gather information to put them into statistics. The reports that are used are collected from the NIBRS (National Incident-Based Reporting System) and NCVS (National Crime Victimization Survey) and published by FBI in their yearly UCR ( Uniform Crime Report.)
