TMA06 Evaluate the claim that conflict is ‘ the motor for identity change’. In this essay I hope to be able to show the relationship between conflict and identity change, by using various theories of identification. Also explore the concept of dis-identification and examples of significance in the conflict and changes of identity. I will first look into identity changes of becoming a mother, and how different their identities change. Then look at different example with that meaning of black skin for identity. How people can conflict their own identities. In 2003 the government funded an organisation that sponsors social science in research in the UK, ESRC (The Economic and Social Research Council). The aim of the programme was to find high quality research on identity and related issues. First time mothers was chosen because a mother is more life changing than most other events, they give life and that life then becomes dependent on that mother, such as that she has to ‘put the baby first’. This is likely to involve her in the kinds of ordinary conflict talked about by Erikson as people move through different phases of their lives ( Holloway, chp 6, p260). Mothers feel as though they have to change their whole persona for their baby’s, to give them the attention they require which in this way changes their whole identities of the mothers that they had before the baby was born. When a woman becomes a mother she has a relationship with her child but she sees that her relationship with others can change, she is treated differently. New mothers have to learn and repeat a great array of practices (feeding, bathing, nappy changing, winding, putting to sleep) through which their new identities as mothers are established (Holloway, chp 6, p261).
