Bullying can now lead to criminal cases and lawsuits. By the schools letting bullying continue it teaches students that it's ok. This creates a fearful environment instead of a learning one. Students feel "let me bully so I don't get bullied". Bullying victims can have a lot of stress added on and it can lead to retaliation such as school shootings as well as suicide.
Cyber bullying is legally defined as actions that use information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group that is intended to harm another or others. Many bullies and witnesses don’t know how severe the effects of cyber bullying can be. People who are cyber bullied often bring harm upon themselves by cutting themselves, or even killing themselves. Studies show that over half of teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying. Bullying is shown in all races.
Teens are on the news for gang related street brawls and taking guns to school because they are being harassed but when they do positive things, it doesn’t get as much recognition. A troubled teen only wants the attention they are not receiving at home. So if being negative and doing negative thing gets attention, that’s what they are going to do. The question, “how can we help prevent the crime rate within our neighborhood?” is often asked. I believe we should try to become more involved and active within our community.
Implementing information in relevance to how kids behave at home. Having a go to person in school is a good alternative as a resource that can be available at school but most suicides are done at home or away from school. In these seminars the parents will learn the red flags to pick up on such as a sudden loss of interest in things they used to enjoy, a change in sleep patterns and how they are doing in school. All these are good indicators to how a child may be battling the struggles of depression and the consideration of suicide begins to hinder. Parents will also be aware of how to keep the home area safe from any easy access to things such as guns as states before.
“Bullying is a big problem that effects millions of students, and it has everyone worried, not just the kids on it’s receiving end” (Lyness 1). Bullying does not just affect kids, but the parents too. It affects the parents because a lot of their children begin to be afraid attending school. In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda was affected by being bullied lead her to think about suicide, scared of coming to school, and victims like Melinda begin to not care about school and fail. Melinda was affected by being bullied and led to many things and one of them is thinking about suicide.
They say that rumors spread through town in the time it takes for the truth to our on its jacket. In today’s society the damaged will often prey on the strong, confident and successful in an effort to level the playing field. Add illicit narcotics into the mix and you have bullies who can become so egotistical they will believe their own lies. Often thought of as something that only effects youth, bullying has become something that can happen to anyone at any time. In recent times there have been reports of people being bullied so bad, they have taken their own lives to escape from the constant torment.
The New Teen Age: 7 Ways to Support Teen Bullying Victims. Retrieved from http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-new-teen-age/201010/7-ways-support-teen-bullying-victims Thesis: Bullying in schools and on the Internet amongst teenagers has greatly increased in the past years; this has led to increased fatalities because so many feel that they don't have anywhere or anyone to go
In recent times, people have resorted to cyber bullying as there is a potential for a wider range of victims to inflict pain and suffering on as compared to the old-fashioned schoolyard bullying. This is because when victims are abused verbally, the victim might not remember every word the bully has said, but in the case of emails and text, chatrooms and websites the targeted students can read what the bully has said over and over again. Moreover, written words seem more concrete and real compared to spoken words.
This is why I believe that it’s not the schools fault. Additionally, the article conveys “‘if a school employee witnesses a behavior that is problematic and makes a conscious decision not to address it, it becomes schools problem’.” (Diblasio). This may be true; however it is only resolved for that incident but later on, the bully can decide to be more careful and bully the student more outside of school because an adult intervened. Now I am not saying not to intervene, just that it wouldn’t make the bullying stop completely. Studies have shown that most of the times, the bully is the one that needs more help because maybe he is bullying because he was or is being bullied too. It is also hard to detect but in most cases, this is true.
I believe that within punishment for these actions, there should be a collaborative educational program involved in the rehabilitation of this mind frame. Unless, there are strict laws against texting while driving to follow, people will not stop doing so and more people will lose their lives. The government should take this matter seriously and try to think about the societal effects of this negligence behind the
