It is essential to fulfill and maintain these four guidelines to ensure safety. The four strategies are as follow: surveillance, access control, territorial reinforcement and maintenance. The report below will highlight the four main points and go into depth on how to use them successfully and efficiently to guarantee the upmost safety for communities, households, and businesses. C. Ray Jeffery created the term CPTED. It is an acronym for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. (C. Ray Jeffery, 1971) At first, his works were somewhat ignored. (Oscar Newman, 1972) was an architect, who around the same time thought of and offered a more limited form of CPTED named “defensible space” which captured Jeffery’s idea and transformed it into a theory based on a study conducted in NY that showed increased crime rate in high-rise buildings than in lower leveled homes. The study also concluded that because of the high population in this kind of apartment homes, they felt as if they shouldn’t have to take responsibility for the place in which they lived. (Jane Jacobs, 1961) made her contribution by writing a book based on the perception that urban planners were destroying urban diversity with urban renewal strategies, which basically meant that cities were starting to be built in a way that neighbors
