The Mercury Reader, Frederick Douglas “Learning to Read and Write” Frederick Douglass was slave who started to learn how to write when he was eight years old. His mistress started teaching him the alphabet. Soon her husband, who didn’t know what was going on, found out that Douglas was learning how to read and he forbade his wife to teach him any longer. He had to find new ways to learn how to read. He started seeing white poor kids in the streets when he was running errands for his master.
Ryan Lawson ENG-101 10-09-09 Anne Lamott has written a humorous essay describing the difficulties encountered by writers when attempting to write a thoughtfully composed work. When reading, “Shitty First Drafts,” several strategies were encountered regarding the successful composition of a piece of writing. Considering how writers work in reality, writing an unorganized elementary first draft, and blocking all pressures surrounding the composition of a certain work are all useful strategies when facing the difficulties of writing. The following paragraphs will describe the usefulness of these strategies during the complicated and often dreaded writing process. In her essay, Lamott emphasizes that both professional and amateur writers encounter obstacles during the writing process.
Biography Luis Miguel Valdez was born on June 26, 1940, in Delano, California, the second of ten brothers and sisters. His mother and father were migrant farmworkers, and Luis began working in the fields at the age of six. Because his family traveled to the harvests in the San Joaquin Valley, Luis received little uninterrupted schooling. In an interview, Valdez discussed one significant, and ultimately fortunate, consequence of such a disruptive early life: His family had just finished a cotton harvest; the season had ended, the rains begun, but because their truck had broken down, the family had to stay put. Leaving school one day, Luis realized he had left behind his paper lunch bag, a precious commodity in 1946, given the paper shortages and the family’s poverty.
At the age of twelve Charles’s mother took him out of school so he could work while his father was in jail for failure to pay debt. Working at a shoe-polish factory, instead of being the kid to grow up and become the intelligent young man he had dreamed of being took its toll on Charles. A Summary of Unit One A Summary of Unit One As writers sometimes you will need to summarize someone else’s thoughts or ideas. In order to do this properly you must, briefly restate, someone else’s content, in your own word’s (Behrens & Rosen, 2013, p. 3). When writing requires paraphrasing instead of quotations the writer needs to understand the work then put it to his/her own words. Quotation are only used when you need to use the exact language of someone else, these should be used scarcely. When writing, knowing how to write a summary, paraphrase, and quote a source is key conveying your ideas without plagiarizing someone else’s.
Since “The Things They Carried” is a collection of short stories, it automatically has multiple meanings. For some the meaning may simply be viewed as a novel of one’s life during the Vietnam War, but it is in fact much more than that. This novel explores such topics as: love, war, relationships, and the reality of the things that not only the characters but we too carry. These meanings are not direct but after reading can be discovered. The next thing that qualifies this book as a classic is the fact that it uses effective, unique style appropriate to the purpose and content.
The Tell-Tale Heart Assignment: We notice that some details in Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” make a literal reading of the story rather difficult. Advance and defend a figurative reading of the story consistent with the story’s details. Poe seems to focus on creating mood throughout his story. Many symbols in this story are interpreted in several different ways depending on the reader. These symbols throughout the story include the old mans eye, the heartbeat and the contradiction between love and hate in which I will be talking about in this paper.
As I Lay Dying The novel As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner tends to make readers confused when beginning to read it due to the theme the book entails. One of the main themes in the novel would have to be the difference of what are the truth and the explanation of what is true. Without a doubt any point is able to end in a massive amount of what is biased due to the different characters and their individual point of views. Each thought they have on what they believe true is dependent on their previous outlooks and thoughts. With that being said anything that is alleged can’t always necessarily be the truth.
For example, Wright is enrolled in school late due to his family’s extreme poverty and that whites try to keep African Americans uneducated as a form of oppression. But that does not stop Wright. His mother helps him to learn to read by reading the newspaper, and the coal deliveryman teaches him to count. Wright has grown to fear the color white. So much so that as a child he runs away from a foster home and encounters a white police officer and does not know if the police officer is going to hurt him or not.
Candy and hears of George and Lennie’s dream and he becomes excited and thrilled with the idea. George tells candy that he can join them on their dream farm, and George and Lennie’s dream now becomes Candy’s. Another man, Crooks, is a crippled African American man who also works on the farm, because of the time period crooks is segregated from the rest of the men because of his race. Throughout Crooks’ life he has always been put down and setback because of his race. When Lennie tells to Crooks of the dream farm, Crooks also becomes fond of the idea and tells Lennie hesitantly “If you… guys would want a hand to work for nothing- just his keep, why I’d come an’ lend a hand I ain’t so crippled..” soon after the reader becomes aware of Crooks’ dream it is crushed by Curley’s Wife who threatens to have Crooks’ fired and even killed because of his race.
