Fuller 6/9/2010 Legalization of Marijuana Marijuana is the most widely illegal drug used by Americans, and the debate regarding legalizing marijuana has been one of the greatest controversial arguments in American today. Marijuana should be legalized because of two reasons, first the medicinal benefits it has, second the potential to boost the countries economy from it being taxed. According to Journal for Education on Medical Marijuana Alameda County has placed a tax on its sale from medical marijuana. This tax is the same as other goods that are taxed in the city at 9.5 percent. Medical marijuana sells for twenty dollars a gram in the medical marijuana dispensaries so each gram will generate $1.90 in tax revenue which will result in billions of dollars of tax revenue. There are other states that impose a tax on marijuana but if the tax is not paid the person will be charged with selling drugs illegally and tax evasion, but if the taxes are paid the law does not bother them and they are considered legalized. Marijuana can generate billions of dollars in federal and state tax revenue so it makes sense in a financial aspect to regulate the marijuana industry, so it can pay taxes just like the alcohol and tobacco industry. If Americans is going to continue to criminalize marijuana then coffee should be criminalized too along with alcohol and tabacco, because if a person drank eighty cups of coffee a day opposed to someone who smoked eighty marijuana cigarettes a day, the person who drank the eighty cups of coffee would overdose, because eighty cups of coffee is a lethal dose of caffeine and a person would die. Most of those who oppose the legalization of marijuana either have something to lose if it is legalized such as the pharmaceutical drugs companies would loss billions of dollars because they would lose sales on prescription medications. There are a lot more businesses that stand to lose if marijuana is legalized, but what people should realize is that legalizing marijuana will not create harm it will do more good than alcohol or tobacco. With the legalization of marijuana every individual will have the opportunity to get the healing their body needs. Smoking marijuana does not derail your life; the medicine brings you back to life. In order to really understand the benefits of smoking marijuana you will have to become one of those people who have suffered with an illness that prescription medication does not help to alleviate the pain or symptoms that comes from the illness. Marijuana has been proven to be beneficial to mankind for many years and it is time for Americans to legalize it and stop criticizing
