| Understanding Food Labels | SCI/241 | | | | | Attempting to understand food labels can be very confusing if one were to begin reading the labels without prior knowledge of how the labels work. Maintaining a healthy diet can be much easier if a person can remember the one simple rule, which applies to the percent daily values of a food. The 5/20 rule dictates that if a food has 5% or less of your daily value of a particular nutrient, then the food is not a good source of that nutrient. On the other hand, if a food has 20% or more of the daily value of a particular nutrient, the food is in fact a good source of that nutrient. This theory works inversely when applied to nutrients that aren’t good for you like saturated
Eating more vegetables and fruits and less junk food are a really good source of vitamins that the body needs in order to maintain a healthy diet (O’Connor, 2008). These fruits are low in calories, which will reduce the person's chance of developing a heart attack. Also eating fruits and vegetables helps make people feel full and avoid high fat foods such as snacks and meats that contain high amounts of trans fat. One way to avoid these snacks or foods that contain high amounts of trans-fat the person should keep vegetable already cut up in small pieces for a quick snack so whenever she gets hungry the fruits or vegetables will be available to grab, which will stop her from grabbing junk food. Whole grains play an important role in keeping the heart healthy.
This is great for people like me who aren’t ready put down the meat. 2. Richard Corliss writes in a Times Magazine article, "Studies shows that consuming more of plant-based foods reduces the risk of chronic diseases. a. Eating more plant-based product will provide great benefits to your health because it contains lower fat and high nutrition.
Fiber, also known as roughage, contains many properties that aid our digestion tract, and allow us to process waste products more efficiently. According to Nutrition.gov (2013) fiber can be found in many of our favorite foods including whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibers dissolve in water, and when digested, “form viscous solutions in the intestines” (Grosvenor & Smolin, 2006). “Fibers that cannot be digested by bacteria in the large intestines are called insoluble fibers because they do not dissolve in water.” (Grosvenor & Smolin, 2006) High fiber diets can produce many benefits, including higher nutrient absorption levels, and better waste output.
Pollan points out that this is easier said then done by describing its not as straightforward as it sounds and that even factors like soil condition and livestock can make this concept a daunting task. Pollan’s answer to this is to simply eat smarter and he goes as far as suggesting that we are part of the problem because we do not spend enough money or time in terms of preparing our food. During his conclusion Pollan gives three rules that he claims will help “Escape the Western Diet”, which include: Eating Food (not too much), and eating mostly plants. which is pretty basic when you think about
This means that they need different types of nutrition’s. For example since their metabolism tend to burn the food faster they need some type of heavy food but not too heavy so soon their metabolism won’t be able to break it down; which will cause them to gain weight. Pollan does point out in his book how fast food is not very healthy and how it is a poor quality of food. I am here to correct what he said towards fast food. Fast food can be good for you if you eat the fast food correctly.
Instead, an easier alternative would be to educate people on the dangers and results of eating unhealthily as well as ensuring the process of making processed foods cost more than the healthier alternatives such as fruit and 100% juice products. The fact that lots of the unhealthy food that the population consumes simply because it is affordable, is one of the main causes for the lack of public health. Government involvement shouldn’t be necessary, but if it is, a plan should be instituted that would allow healthier options to be cheaper than the unhealthier alternatives that are more common. Also, the FDA should take a deeper look into the long lasting affects of the chemicals found in common foods such as soda
Benefits of being veg*etarian*. The most common reason that Americans choose not to eat meat is to improve their health, the second most popular reason is the desire to avoid the hormones and other additives in animal products, a more specific health consideration. Vegetarianism certainly has health benefits, although there are disadvantages to going vegetarian like lack of B-12, vitamin D, Iron, Zinc and Calcium. *Conclusion*. Our culture and our obsession for the American meal to include meat and dairy products hasus killing ourselves.
Lars has some skills about nutrition. Indeed, he prefers canned goods because they are the best food which can be found in Dumpster. Whatever canned goods are contaminated or not, his experience enables him to use them safely. For example, he knows that all canned goods must “contain a slight vacuum and suck air when first punctured.” That means they are healthy. However, cans which do not present this fact, we should avoid.
Bacteria will not multiply in dry areas, but as soon as liquid is added, for instance to dried food like powdered milk and dried eggs, the products will provide ideal conditions for bacteria to multiply. However, if enough salt or sugar have been added to foods such as bacon, savoury biscuits, jam and confectionery, this will absorb the available moisture in the food so the bacteria cannot multiply as easily. It is not only moist foods that provide the right environment for bacteria, though. Moist skin or damp areas of an environment will also provide the right atmosphere for bacterial growth. Nutrients Bacteria, like all living things, need nutrients to survive.
