Ignorance sweeps across the white citizens of South Africa like a plague. It causes them to be blind, and leaves them without a care to see their wrongdoings towards the blacks in their society. They cling to their twisted Christian ideologies, believing one thing and doing the opposite. By using parallelism, diction, and a biblical allusion to portray a series of arguments, Alan Paton conveys his great dislike for the accepted truths of his self-proclaimed Christian South Africans. Through Arthur Jarvis’ letter, Alan Paton paints the picture of a racist society in which those at the top look down upon the ones at the bottom.
As stated earlier, the meaning of the word “race” is merely the categorization of different populations, on earth, among humans. If the “Negro” was really one of the lowest races, that would be considered a different specie, he or she wouldn’t be able to reproduce any offspring with someone of white race or a different race. Even though, Dr. Hunt somewhat agrees “that the offspring of all the mixtures of the so-called races of man are
The main concern and issue in TKAM is the concept of prejudice. In the text, prejudice is represented mainly through the racial inequality in the town of Maycomb . In the text, we see Atticus' belief in treating and respecting everyone as an individual contrasted with a number of other wold views. The aspect of racism is shown when the people of Maycomb accept the testimony of an obviously corrupt white man. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”.
Drabble is correct to argue that people tend to ignore truth in order to follow societal standards. In today's world it is often difficult to adjust to one type of lifestyle or another. The constant bombardments of outside opinions hamper our ability to choose and be comfortable with a certain way of living. Therefore, blind conformity is actually a molding of what is said to be normal in society instead of using differences to enhance humans. The malicious acts committed by Malcolm X reflect the idea that people ignore truth to conform to society.
Besides, all kind of illegal or immoral activities would remain and root deeply in the society if most of citizens are ignorance. In the play, ignorance is apparently portrayed and paralleled to the compact majority. The compact majority can be compared to un-educated people who are generally seen in many developing countries. Compared the Bath to technology development or social development, the city cannot accomplish this development surely since the compact majority is ignorance. Ibsen, faithfully, wrote the play as a way to criticize Europe society at the times when people were not interested in any technologies and truths.
It also shows that they were sentenced to at birth because of the color of their skin. It even examines the stability, and instability of the human mind, for people from all different ethnicities such as white and black. There is also pain that this novel expresses that proves to be unbearable to such crimes are not socially accepted in today's society, but are they? The Heart of Darkness was written during the time of British imperialism and extreme exploitation of Africans in the Congo. It also shows Conrad's feelings toward the treatment of Africans which aren’t easily understood.
A native son is a product of the violence and racism that suffused the devastating social conditions in which he was raised. By no means does Wright downplay the oppression of blacks by whites, but he does demonstrate that much of the racial inequality was due to the profound lack of understanding, among both blacks and whites, of the other social group. Bigger’s misunderstanding of whites binds him to a self-fulfilling insight, because as he behaves according to what he believes is his racial destiny. An important quote that can describe the racism in the story as well as the racism during that time is when Wright writes, "We live here and they live there. We black and they white."
To Europeans, Africans are savages or in other words, animals. They are wild and not intelligent. They probably don’t even have a language. These are all the fixes that the white people have put on the Africans. Although, in the novel Things Fall Apart by Achebe, he combats that idea through various examples of stories from the Igbo culture to show that the African people are much more complex than how the Europeans sees them as.
Society jumped on board and were mocking her as she tried to deal with these personal issues. Society is extremely judgmental. It is difficult to express yourself freely in a society that is so judgemental. Who you love is a decision that should be made by you, and you only, however, when governments and society become involved, it is hard to truly express yourself. Emmit till was a black man that was tortured and killed because he was apparently
Many argue that despite the genetic differences between human beings they cannot be 'meaningfully divided into a set of non-overlapping categories called races' (Boyd & Silk 2006: 424). Although it is plain to see that race is very much real in a social dynamic, there is an ongoing debate about whether it is a scientifically valid concept. Social Darwinism sought to integrate the principles of Darwin's evolutionary theory into a social and political context and was inherently racist. Francis Galton's 'Eugenics' argues that some human beings are more evolved than others and therefore superior, and goes to the extent of saying that whites, blacks, Amerindians and Asians are all different species, static and created by god. Many opposers of evolutionary theory point to Eugenics and the principles of Social Darwinism and claim that the theory of evolution and natural selection is therefore racist.
