Condoms and College With the recent decision by the administration of Camden County College to put condom dispensers in the restrooms, brings a lot of controversy. The administration came to this conclusion after AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, has become an ever growing issue with the student population. The argument surrounding this issue included the schools showing interest in preventive measures to reassure the student population. The opposing argument is that putting condom dispensers in CCC will only encourage irresponsible behaviors. Giving access to the condoms will increase the number of under age sex at the college. Sexual behavior is common amongst the age group that attend the college, there is no doubt about that. Along with sex comes consequences, I do agree that something needs to be done. The addition of the dispenser is a step in the right direction. To understand the problem at hand, it is imperative that we identify the need for the dispensers. AIDS is a growing world epidemic. At the end of 2009 the number for AIDS related deaths were 1.8 million. (www.avert.org/worldstats.htm) Jersey is not immune to these staggering numbers. In 2008 34,766 people where diagnosed with HIV in New Jersey. With that number so high it is hard to believe that, only 58 percent of sexually active teenagers use condoms, according to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey . The Camden County College administrations decision to put in the dispensers is not a new idea. In Missouri condom dispensers where added to MU residence halls as an implementation of Sexual Health and Safety Products Initiative. The condoms are free and are packaged with an instructional health safety pamphlet.
