Ans. Love is a universal poetic theme. From classical period to modern age many poets have used it according to their own vision. Some used it intellectually, some emotionally & some hyperbolically. Shakespeare & E. B. Browning are great poets of two different age. Love has been expressed in many ways in their works. But their expression style is different from each other. Similarities: The main theme of the poem is similar. They both are love poems. We can say that sonnet 18 is subjective. The poet is expressing his feelings about his friend here. While the sonnet 43 is also subjective as the poetess utters her own feelings towards her beloved by saying “I love thee” again and again. Both the poems end with a reference to the future. “Sometimes too hot the eye of heaven shines,” In sonnet 43 there seems to be no metaphor. In sonnet 18 there are no similes while in sonnet 43 there are two similes “I love thee freely, as men strive for right” “I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.” In sonnet 18 the sun and death is personified. “& often is his gold complexion dimmed;” “Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,” In sonnet 43 no personification can be found. Another literary device that is present in sonnet 43 is caesura. “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” In sonnet 18 the poet’s love has not got any religious dimension while in sonnet 43 poet’s love has got religious dimensions. “For the ends of Being & ideal Grace” These sonnets are thus remarkable compositions.
