The Mayans preformed a ritual was to make themselves bleed to please the gods. On the other hand, the Shang thought themselves as superiors to all others. Both these civilizations had similarities, both relied on agriculture and their ruling method. One of the many differences, is the Mayans had a religion while the Shang did not. The Maya and Shang relied on similar agricultural methods and political structures with small kingdoms and one ruler; however, they differed culturally since the Shang had no religion and the Mayans did. Both civilizations organized into hierarchies of power, although the Mayan small city-kingdom system worked better than the Shang decentralized states. Unlike the Mayans, the Shang had many governors and trusted them to carry out the orders. However, the governors were not hundred percent loyal to their king and rebelled a lot. The only reason they stayed in power for a certain time was that they could monopolize their bronze. One of the reasons, the Shang began to decline is when their subjects started their allegiance to the Zhou. This led to the Shang be overpowered. The Zhou convinced the subjects about the Shang king is a bad ruler and losing the Mandate of Heaven. The Mayan small city-states system collapsed because of infighting among small kingdoms. Both these civilizations were once a powerful state, although, they both decline due to rebellion from small kingdoms. Economically, the Shang and Mesoamerica both relied greatly on agricultural. The Shang relied on the generous portion of agricultural productions from the regions they controlled. They also use its stable agricultural surplus to build a trade-centered civilization. Since, they rose in the Yellow River Valley, that river deposited loess which fertile the fields.
