Age of Explorations The Age of Exploration/European expansion was not fueled solely by economic considerations, however, religion played a major role in motivating the European exploration in the early modern era, from the conflicts between Islam and Christianity. We cannot base this expansion on whether it was immoral or moral because of the conflicts within the two religions. The reason that caused the movement/explorations of the Christians was how Christianity failed to complete their "crusade", which was actually a more of gaining more land than a crusade to help the Byzantine empire from the Turks. The Europeans failed in the crusades, trade must go through the Middle East and India instead of being controlled by the Europeans/Christianity, which made the Europeans become desperate and were need for more land and control. The Europeans started to expand to search for more land through the naval academy.
Before beginning “Victors and Vanquished” edited by Stuart B. Schwartz, I was under the assumption that it would basically be a summary of events from the time period engulfing the Spanish entering Mexico. I knew that it would have some true accounts of letters and documents from the time. However, I was pleasantly surprised with all the new information that made me take a different stance on the Indians and Cortez and the relationship between. I feel that the editor set out to bring us a collaboration of information to give a further understanding of the human interactions. I love history; however, sometimes I tend to forget that these are real people and not fictional stories.
Why did Cortes attack the Aztecs? I thought Cortes and Montezuma wanted to gain recognition between the two empires so Montezuma gave goods to the Spaniards. I think Cortes got greedy and wanted to take over the Aztec empire because of all the goods they were receiving. It can also be because he wanted more land and resources for
21.1 4,5,6 4. Explain how the “new imperialism” differed from old imperialism. Also, explain how imperialism came to be associated with Social Darwinism? - New imperialism differed from the old imperialism because instead of a country creating a colony and claiming land they just setup trading areas like plantations. This became associated with social Darwinism because it refers to the survival of the fittest of the countries with power.
The Homestead Act was introduced to let Native Americans who were already citizens to get land as well as women. It’s basically the same thing as the Dawes Act because they were both helping the United States grow westward but then again, the Native Americans weren’t happy about it. It was successful in helping the United States move westward but the Native Americans weren’t happy about it because their land was being taken away from them. Students would have made modified it to make it fairer to the Indians by putting them in favor. They would have probably given them ¼ of the land in the west and took the rest.
Chapter 2- Section 1: Imperial Conflicts and Rival Colonial Models The Spanish and the French differed because the Spanish forced the Indians to covert to Catholicism and to work digging gold and farming for large estates. As it stated on page 40, “In Mesoamerica the Spanish colonial regime forced the Indians to convert to Catholicism and to work digging gold and farming large estates.” In contrast the French didn’t really bother the natives. As it stated on page 40, “In the Fur-Trading empires created by the French and the Dutch, the native people retained their lands and political autonomy…” The Spanish, French, Dutch, and English pursued contrasting methods of settlement because each had a different belief system. For example the Spanish
He opens the story up by describing the natives of the Indies. According the Bartolome “these people are the most devoid of wickedness and duplicity, the most obedient and faithful to their native masters and to the Spanish Christians whom they serve. They were a great people not caring for earthly things which was why they were not arrogant or greedy people. Instead of caring for earthly things, they were very peaceful, caring greatly for others and their wellbeing. Sadly, it was after some Spaniards had already settled there and were at peace with the Indians, that some of the other Spaniards heard that they had the healthiest land in the world “more fertile and beautiful than the gardens of the king of Seville”.
Indians throughout were forced to surrender their lands, and although they put up resistance, it was not enough to stop settlers’ expansion and the Indian’s lands were violently taken, and many were killed in the process. “Behind the English invasion and their massacre of Indians, their deception, their brutality was that special powerful drive born in civilizations based on private property. ...the need for space, for land, was a real human need. ..this human need was transformed into the murder of whole peoples.”(Zinn, pg. 16, A People’s History Of the United States) Wealth and fortune was measured by the amount of land a white man had ; therefore, acquiring land by exerting power with lies and deception was the goal of any settler who wanted to be perceived as a prosperous wealthy man.
Many historians consider the Spanish-American War to be a conflict that American journalists not only reported but helped create. The United States had complex motives for going to war against Spain in 1898; sympathy for its Cuban neighbors mixed with the nation's own global ambitions. But Americans were also driven to war by their emotions, stirred by a series of newspaper stories. For decades, Cuban patriots had waged guerrilla warfare against Spanish rule. Outnumbered and poor, the revolutionaries tried to disrupt the Cuban economy by burning sugarcane plantations.
Fernando Vargas Jr. 07/25/11 1) How has racist ideology and imagery been used to legitimate injustice in the United States? The racist ideology in America can be traced all the way back to the discovery of this country with Columbus. Plain and simple, Columbus exploited the Native Americans for personal gain as well for the gain of Spain and the rest of Europe (Shohat Stam). The Spaniards would go on to wreak havoc for the Natives that were settled along the southern parts of the United States, destroying one group after another. With the colonization of America in the 1600’s it would not take long to annihilate the customs and traditions of the Native Americans.
