Communication is important in developing relationships with children and young people because having positive relationships with the people we interact with makes our daily lives easier and more productive. In an educational environment maintaining positive relationships opens up opportunities for good communication, it gives us confidence in our ability and an understanding of our environment. Accepting shared responsibility by knowing what our role is and what’s expected of us is very important, following recognised procedure and understanding shared values all promote good relationships.
Reggio Emilia focuses more on the role family centered care play in impacting children’s development. John Dewey supports the idea of making children lifelong learners by increasing their awareness of the world and providing them with the necessary skills to function and operate productively and responsibly in society. All three theorist espouse the fundamental certainty that children if given the proper care and social interactions, can develop into critical conscious beings aware of themselves and the world in which they live. Teacher-child and peer interaction are two integral aspects of children critical development. Vygotsky supports this notion and argues that family centered care increases children’s awareness through dialogue, child initiated play, and other engaging challenging explorations such as small groups interactions and the overall interactions with others.
By basing knowledge on how children develop and learn, it can help make more developmentally appropriate activities. The children would learn more, and you would be more successful as a teacher. *Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family. Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults in all aspects of life and at any age whether it would be with relatives, friends, neighbours, colleagues or even total strangers.
A combination of the elements mentioned above ensures complementary areas of students learning are addressed. Through the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PoLT), the classroom is described as being a place that is supportive, motivating, engaging, diverse, and challenging. It is also outlined that assessment should be fair, transparent, and productive. The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) allows for the value of the context to be linked with the content of the classroom. The Reporting and Assessment Advice ensures that outcomes of these environments are communicated regularly to parents providing them with “easily understood information about how their child is progressing and plans for future learning.” Through my teaching practices, I mindful that my teaching strategies and abilities need to combine with those set out in the initiatives and methodologies to provide a safe and engaging learning environment for all students.
Children depend on adults (who also are as healthy as possible) to make healthy choices for them and to teach them to make healthy choices for themselves. Teaching: Children benefit most when their teachers have high levels of formal education and specialized early childhood professional preparation. Families: Young children’s learning and development are integrally connected to their families. Consequently, to support and promote children’s optimal learning and development, programs need to recognize the primacy of children’s families, establish relationships with families based on mutual trust and respect, support and involve families in their children’s educational growth, and invite families to fully participate in the program. Community: As part of the fabric of children’s communities, an effective program establishes and maintains reciprocal relationships with agencies and institutions that can support it in achieving its goals for the curriculum, health promotion, children’s transitions, inclusion, and diversity.
The culturally responsive classroom “specifically acknowledges the presence of culturally diverse students and the need for these students to find connections among themselves and with the subject matter and the tasks the teacher asks them to perform” by using instructional strategies which, place students into “cooperative learning groups, [an environment wherein] culturally familiar speech and events [are discussed], [and] wait time for students from CLD backgrounds [is] adjusted to enhance classroom participation and development of critical thinking skills.” (Brown, p.60,
Positive relationships enable information to be communicated far more effectively. Working in a school this will benefit pupils when you are dealing with parents or carers as they will be more willing to get involved in the child or young person’s education and care. Building and maintaining positive relationships and effective communication with pupils will help them know and understand what is expected of them and acceptable boundaries. In order to develop positive relationships with children, young people and adults effective communication is vital. To effectively communicate we must: • think consciously (everyone is an individual) • explain (be clear, use appropriate language) • listen actively ( occasional nods and eye contact) • be true to our word (say what you mean, mean what you say) • recall (repeat snippets of what has been said to you) • have empathy (non-bias understanding of others situations) • clarify and question (ask the other party if they understand what you have said ) • body language (your own and reading the other persons) Not putting the above skills into practice will create barriers to effective communication and positive
Assessments are a crucial part of education and there is a need to measure where student are at in order to adjust curriculum and motivation. This needs to be done carefully and with very high consideration of the student’s emotional well-being. Rewards systems and positive reinforcement are crucial to creating a supportive environment that students want to be present in. * Nurturing- Creating a love for learning will make learning easier. Finding ways to make the material fun, engaging, and easy to comprehend will nurture a love of learning.
