Common Techniques In “Life Is Beautiful” And “Child” By Sylvia Plath * Innocence * When Plath writes '... Pool in which should be grand and classical' she starts getting into the reality of a child’s situation. A child's mind should be filled with things that are pure and innocent just like the child. * Relatable to “Life is Beautiful”, innocence shows many symbols and forms; such as when it is shown by the two main adult characters – Guido and Dora (parents of Joshua). In a few instances, and in particular, innocence is shown by their four and a half year old son. This innocence is protected by Guido, who shows bravery and the power of imagination in doing this. * Joshua’s innocence is established in many ways throughout the film. Firstly, he has the typical innocence of a four year old. The camera accentuates his big, round eyes and his child-like delight at his father’s games. * Love and the Child to Mother or Father Relationship * In “Child” the mothers love is expressed as she admires the purity of her child’s eyes. She wants to give happiness to the child by filling her eyes with the colours and toys that normally delight children. Plath uses an image of “zoo” and uses words like “colour and ducks” to show the exciting range of new experiences that she wants to give her young child, because she loves him dearly. * In “Life is Beautiful”, Dora is disappointed by her life, because she doesn’t have love, even though she is engaged to a wealthy man. She finds in Guido and in Joshua, the love she lacked at the beginning of the film. After she gets married to her true love (Guido), she takes control of her own life and decides to follow her heart at any cost, even if it means following the family that she loves to a death camp. * For the duration of the film, Joshua’s innocence is preserved and protected by his
