Women and Flexibility in the Workplace SOC402: Contemporary Social Problems & the Workplace Professor: Frank Huber July 19, 2013 The American work place was designed for workers that will contribute eight hours a day, and work until they reach retirement age. There was no initial consideration for women in the work place, whom also wanted to develop a family and child caring. The initial workplace was design for men to come on in their twenties and leave in their sixties, not for the flexibility that a woman requires today in the current workplace. Flexibility in the work place is an excellent recruitment tool for organization wanting to enhance their company competitive edge by hiring the brightest people within their career field. Flexibility allows women the ability to raise a family and also contribute to a full time job. In my organization there are several forms of flexibility like telework. Telework allow employee that or approved to do telework the ability to work from home one day a week. This flexibility helps employees that commute long distances to work, provide them more time to spend with their families and save money from gas expenses to travel back and forth to work. The other form of flexibility that my organization offers is the compress work schedule. The compress work schedule allows an employee to work ten hour days versus eight hour days. The benefit from this form of flexibility allows the employee to be off one day a week; which allows them to contribute more time towards their family. Women are the back bone of a family social life, and if they are working a full time job with no flexibility, then that social life is lost.
