My personal experience with this organization started in 2009 when I was invited to a match. I had never been to a professional soccer match and was blown away at all the chanting, yelling and unified response to the actions of the players. Basketball and football games have passionate fans, too, but with everyone around me on their feet and chanting the entire 90+ minutes, I was hooked. I purchased my season tickets and have been a part of the Timbers Army ever since. With this experience in mind, I hope to analyze how two theoretical ideas relate to this organization – Parson’s Social Action Theory and Merton’s concepts of manifest and latent function.
Most of the time the wingers have to bring the ball into the middle where the striker should score. The striker position is the worldwide role model of the team; the kids are looking soccer and see the strikers first on the poster. Most of the people knows the Brazilian Pele, The Argentinian Diego Maradonna, The Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo (who plays for Real Madrid in Spain) or the Argentinian Lionel Messi (who plays for FC Barcelona in Spain) because there are strikers and they score all night long so everybody knows them. They are global brands, you can do promotion with them and the product where they promote will sell so good because everyone will have the product where their idols promote. The Netherlands has made a late comeback and tied up the game with two minutes left in regular time. Then, Arjen Robben, a winger for the Dutch side had seemingly flopped to the ground in the penalty box after having little contact from a Mexican defender. This led to the referee calling a penalty kick, which the Dutch then scored to win them the game and put them through to the quarterfinals. There is still controversy on whether or not it was a dive. However, this is an example of how diving can give players an advantage and changed the outcome of the game.
My dad once told me a story about a pitch magician, who scored two most popular goals ever in one game. I remember dad telling how hard he laughed at Russian football commentators at that game. I always was sort of one-of-the-boys kind of girl, who knew what an offside was. Strangely, I never liked Diego Maradona, just didn't respect him for that Hand of God/Hand of Diego trick, but it was really interesting to watch Emir Kusturica's movie.
