Debate paper #2 How should we deal with illicit-licit drug use? Oxycontin is a pharmaceutical drug that is prescribed for people to relieve moderate severe pain. The use of this drug as a recreational drug started in rural areas like Appalachia and has increased in the United States beginning in the late 1900s. One would normally think since oxycontin recreational use has become so extreme, banning it would make society a better place; however, prohibiting it might just make it the opposite. There may be a few reasons why prohibition of oxycontin would be bad but I feel as though the main reason is because if that occurs, it is going to cause people to resort to harder drugs, such as heroin.
By legalizing Marijuana, we can reduce the cost of pharmaceutical development for medicines used to reduce the side effects of cancer treatments. Barry McCaffrey, director of the Office of National Drug Policy, authorized a review of Institute of Medicine (IOM) and discovered that IOM admitted that cannabis had medical value but the standpoint of the IOM offered was that “smoking is too dangerous a mode of drug delivery for cannabis—a conclusion based on an overestimate of the toxicity of marijuana smoke. Among its major recommendations was that patients with "debilitating symptoms (such as intractable pain or vomiting)" be permitted to smoke marijuana only after all conventional treatment options have failed—and then, only for six months and under "an oversight strategy comparable to an institutional review board process." In the end, the question boiled down to how to
Chris Clavell Writing Studies Geoff Bender Thefreedictionary.com defines prescription drugs as a drug that is available only with written instructions from a doctor or dentist to a pharmacist (“Prescription”). Prescription drugs are usually stronger than over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and have a better chance of curing certain conditions than OTCs. The instructions given by doctors are to be followed strictly or side-effects may occur. But what happens when patients only seek the help of drugs for the narcotic side-effects? The addiction for “prescription” drugs is as strong as classic street drugs such as heroin or cocaine.
It works by blocking the action of substances in the body that cause the symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis. How should this medicine be used? OxyContin should never be given to another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it. Finally, before using OxyContin, the doctor must be notified if the patient is allergic to any drugs, or if you have: asthma, sleep apnea, or other breathing disorders liver or kidney disease underactive thyroid

Relaxation is one that most people who use the drug comment on immediately; sleepiness is another effect of the drug. Dry, red, itchy eyes are some of the immediate negative effects of the drug along with short- term memory loss. The short- term memory loss, from what most people say, goes away after the other immediate effects go away. Laughter and happiness can be a positive effect as long as you are in a comfortable location, though when people are out of their comfort zone they have admitted anxiety problems like faster heart beat and paranoia. Hunger and dry mouth are the other two immediate negative effects that people have, but these short-term effects are the reason that the recent medical interest has come about for
Those who are drug resistant may be offered clozapine which in an atypical drug and has a similar effect to chlorpromazine, reducing positive symptoms and some negative symptoms. Clozapine is effective in 50% of drug resistant patients however this still means that 15% of schizophrenics do not respond to drug treatments and therefore this suggests that brain neurochemistry is only one in a number of factors that cause schizophrenia. There are side effects with both of these drug treatments, clozapine can weaken and damage the immune system and chlorpromazine may cause the schizophrenic to develop facial tics which is known as tarrdive dyskinesia. It is therefore very important that patients receive the correct dosage because if they are given too little then the drugs are unlikely to benefit the patient and if given too much then they may be exposed to unnecessary side effects
