Running head: My Beliefs, Values, and Clinical Gestalt My Beliefs, Values, and Clinical Gestalt with Individuals and Systems Carolyn Osmanski BSHS/322 October 4, 2010 Ty Little Abstract This paper will address what I have learned about my personal and professional assumptions about clinical helping and their relationship to my own beliefs, values, past experiences, familiar and cultural background, and the larger societal and systems context of my life, and the types of clients I may have to work with. I assume that people who struggle with addiction are hiding from their feelings. I also assume that they feel there is no way to stay clean and cope with life without drugs. My professional assumption I have learned is that they need help with learning new tools to cope with life without the use of drugs. I also assume that if they truly want to stay clean they will do anything in their will power to learn the tools so they can learn how to live life without the use of drugs. Beliefs, values, past experiences, familiar and cultural background For myself to have a relationship with people who struggle with addiction I have to take in consideration of their beliefs, values, past experiences, familiar, and cultural background. I have to understand that my beliefs, values, past experiences, familiar, and cultural background are not the same as theirs. In order for me to gain a relationship with my client I have to make sure that my own thinking does not get in the way because I can cause more harm than good. It’s also important that they also respect their client’s beliefs, values, past experiences, familiar, and cultural background in order for treatment to be effective. What I have learned is that in order for me to better myself at my career my clinical gestalt has to be more focused on what is happening at that moment in time with my client. With that in mind, as a clinician I can help my client with their own support in addressing their issue with addiction. The areas of my strength can not only benefit my career, but it can benefit my client by showing them that anything is possible if they just put their mind to it. Lastly, I will always be learning new techniques and ways to become better in my career and with my clients.
