Effective Communication June 3rd, 2013 CJA/224 Jeffery Pomerantz University of Phoenix When someone goes to work, orders a burger from the fast food place, or needs something they have to communicate in order to get what they need. Reading the news and even watching the news is a form of communication. No matter where we are or what we do, somehow some way communication is a part of it. It is one of the most important things that humans rely on. With communication come many forms. Some are non-verbal and some are verbal. In criminal justice many documents are written to make sure that everything is done correctly. Police officers fill out reports when they have a case. If they do not fill out the report properly it could do damage when it comes to the situation going to court, if it does go to court. Verbal communication is important in the same sense. When someone is talking to you the person needs to speak clearly and not leave any words out. With this also come the tone a person uses, body language, and profanity (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). These are important to criminal justice because when someone is talking to you the tone of voice you have along with body language can make a situation worse or better. Emotional barriers are based on personal experiences or expectations (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). Police officers with low self-esteem may experience this type of barrier (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). In order to fix this barrier an officer may go to a peer support group. Another barrier officers may face is a physical barrier. When an officer has an equipment malfunction or has to report to a supervisor instead of a peer it will be considered a physical barrier (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). Then comes ineffective listening when a person may hear what is being said but does not know what is said.
