The film, Cinderella Man, was filmed in 2005. It was based on a true story about a boxer, James J. Braddock, who originated from a poor and unsuccessful boxing career to the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Even though the Great Depression made his success a challenge, Braddock managed to create an outstanding comeback. At the beginning of the movie James J. Braddock was living in a good household and made a decent amount of money as a boxer, but when the stock market crashed he lost all his investments. He lost his career due to his physical wounds. His boss did not want Braddock to hold him back on his winnings, so he let Braddock go and he took Braddock’s boxing license. After losing his job, his family wasn’t able to earn enough money to pay for their electricity, heat, and house. Braddock had only one choice and that was to work. However, during the Great Depression, getting a job was very difficult. There were many Americans in need of jobs, and only a few were able to work per day. Even with the job, there was not enough money to pay for the houses. Many families at that time sent their kids away to keep the safe. Many Americans lost control of their lives. The nation was in shock, many working families began showing up at Salvation Army shelters. Many Americans did not think they would take in food lines, work lines, and public relief lines, but slowly the lines were common. The poorest families were forced to live in “Hooverville”, a cardboard-shack shanty town that sprang up on the edges of most major cities. Thousands upon thousands of others roamed the country, searching for jobs no matter how difficult, demeaning or dangerous they were. For the first time since the nation’s pilgrim beginnings, many Americans faced the very real and haunting prospect of hunger and malnutrition.
