Taste Test: Splenda vs. Sugar Taste Test: Splenda vs. Sugar Introduction Americans are more health conscience now than they were decades ago which is why they are completely dedicated to finding ways to consistently reducing the caloric and sugar intake in their diets. As a result, many are focusing on the use of artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes. Because of this health conscience era, the use of Splenda, in particular is used in just about every food, drink, candy etc. Splenda, along with other artificial sugar product, is popular because it does not add any calories, but what makes Splenda stand apart from other sugar substitutes is its claim that it is made from sugar and taste exactly like sugar. Although widely accepted, there are those that prefers the use and taste of nothing but regular sugar because they do not like the tast of the artificial sugars on the market, however, although Splenda’s claim of being made from sugar and taste exactly like sugar, there are those that swear that they could taste the difference between the two.
| High Fructose Corn Syrup: Too Sweet to Eat? | High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is definitely bad for you. It is also bad for the planet, and I believe that it is a major driver of the obesity epidemic, despite the position taken in June 2008 by the American Medical Association. The AMA concluded that HFCS isn't any worse than other caloric sweeteners and that there is "insufficient evidence" to restrict its use or require a warning label on products that contain it.HFCS is a relatively recent invention for sweetening soft drinks, juices and foods - the production process was developed in Japan in the late 1960s, and the new sweetener entered the American food system in the early 1970s. It tastes sweeter than regular corn syrup, blends well
Kids consume one to two cups or more which double the content of sugar consumption. What’s interesting is that General Mills makes more than just sugary cereals, they also make some “healthy” more adult cereals. Cheerios for instance, claimed to reduce Cholesterol and had studies to back it up; the Food and Drug Administration told General Mills they could not market Cheerios showing clinical trials they may or may not have been accurate causing speculation on the validity of their
Constants: The shape and size of the chocolate. HYPOTHESIS: I think that candies in wrappers will melt first because; I think the wrapper heats up. I also think that kisses chocolates will melt faster than bars. I believe that candies with a candy coating like M&Ms will melt slower than a candy without coating. I think the candy bar will melt differently because they have different ingredients on them.
Carb-Cutter; Blocker of Carbs or a Phony? Rumor has it that there is a miracle weight loss product that slows down the digestion of carbohydrates. These diet pills contain carb-cutter which blocks amylase, the enzyme that breaks down starch into glucose. With this being done, Carb-Cutter neutralizes the amylase before it starts the breakdown. This allows your body to pass starch through without turning it into glucose.
This drug significantly reduced cholesterol from 40 percent to 72 percent when given at two-week intervals. It was also given at four-week intervals but the effects were not nearly as significant. However, “Six patients, all receiving REGN727, stopped the therapy due to adverse events which included headache, injection site reactions, and diarrhea” (Curley, Ann, CNN, 2012). Those side effects would likely scare anyone. That is why the government needs to step in and offer a grant for these companies to dig deeper into their studies and come up with something that has less side effects.
A Deadly Drug Who ever thought that sugar, one of the sweetest ingredients you could add to your food, would be deadly to someone. According to “The Toxic Truth About Sugar” by Robert Lustig, Laura Schmidt, and Claire Brindis; sugar can not only cause infectious diseases, but also 35 million deaths annually. Studies have shown that sugar causes diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Although obesity is the main cause of the deaths that occur, sugar is the main reason for obesity. Tobacco and alcohol are regulated by the government to protect public health, yet sugar still isn’t.
We could even lower the cost of health care in the future as well. Unhealthy eating habits contribute to health problems such as diabetes, Madden 3 Obesity and heart problems. The eating habits that cause these problems are our negligence in every way and we must control them at all costs. We have to hold ourselves accountable rather than blaming some fast food place and take control of our lives. We can’t sue Wal Mart for selling us an unlimited amount of chocolates, so why can we consider suing due to the fact that we have consumed too many calories from a meal we purchased at some fast food establishment?
For example, Pollan talks about margarine, and how scientists “claim” that it is a better, and cheaper substitute for butter, but it contains all these unnecessary ingredients that could be more harmful to the human body. Scientist believed by taking out saturated fats and cholesterol they could make margarine healthier, but what they did not know was it would produce unhealthier fats known as, trans fats. People never think about how deep and revealing food can be, but after reading this novel it’ll open your eyes to what really lies
Currently American citizens are unhealthy due to many factors - one of which is the direct effect of a poor diet. Dairy has become a staple in America’s diet. What would you think if I slid a tall glass of ice cold milk in front of you? Would you think, “Ah the drink of strength, of strong bones and a healthy start to my day, the symbol of longevity and American fortitude.” or would you think, “Why is it hardwired into America’s mind that if you do not drink milk regularly your bones will become as brittle as a candy cane? If I do not drink my milk what on earth will happen to me?” Well I am in the minority and chose the second string of thoughts.
