Abstract The health issue I’ve chosen to discuss are sexual transmitted diseases also known as STD’s particularly Chlamydia. I will be focusing on in my paper are teenagers ages 15-18 years of age who live in the Southeast, Bronx. I chose this location due to the fact that STD’s rates are the highest among teenagers. I have chosen this particular health issue due to the fact that STD’s rates among teens have reached epidemic levels. These infections can be spread quickly among teenagers because those age groups tend to have more sexual partners than other age groups. When transmitted through sexual contact, the bacteria can infect the urinary and reproductive organs. The term Chlamydia typically refers to the STD Chlamydia trachomatis, although two other types of this bacterium also can lead to illness. Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics but often there are symptoms, so the disease can be unknowingly transmitted. Untreated Chlamydia infections can lead to more serious health problems, such as infertility. Therefore it is important for sexually active teens to be screened for Chlamydia at least yearly by a health care provider. Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Castle Hill Center At the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, they seek to improve and enhance the quality of life for all young people, with special emphasis on those who need us most between ages 6-18. Health Belief Model The Health Belief Model (HBM) is based on the theory that a person’s willingness to change their behaviors is primarily due to the following factors. Using the Health Belief model I have created what I believe to be an effective STD health education program for teenagers of Southeast, Bronx, by addressing the factors that affect a teenager’s willingness to change their health behavior. Perceived Susceptibility: People will not change their behaviors unless they believe that they are at risk. For example, teenagers that don’t think they are at risk for acquiring Chlamydia from unprotected intercourse and multiple sex partners are unlikely to use condoms. In order to help these teenagers an accurate perception of their level of risk I have chosen to do an ad campaign. This intervention and activity convinces teenagers that people from all walks of life can be at risk of contracting Chlamydia. The ad campaign consists of teenage girls and teenage boys who talk about how they contracted a STD.
