Roselyn Vasquez Mr.Brochart 2nd period October 11th 2013 Is Freedom Worth It? How far are you willing to go for freedom? Freedom is a beautiful thing but it can also be the death of some people in the novel krik? Krak! The characters face a lot of problems with freedom. A lot of characters even died before getting to escape their problems for freedom. In this book Edwidge Danticat uses foreshadowing, symbolism, and imagery in her novel to show the theme “The high cost of freedom.” There are many ways to use foreshadowing to explain the high cost of freedom. In this book Edwidge uses foreshadowing many times to prove a point to describe freedom. In the story “Children of the sea” two lovers were separated because of a revolution against Baby Doc. An example for foreshadowing would be in the story “Children of the sea” on page 10 the boy said “I cannot help but wonder how long this tar will hold out.” That represents that he knows he might die and not escape his fate to die on that boat the author uses foreshadowing to get readers hooked even more than they are. Edwidge uses symbolism to show how different things or people can symbolize the high cost of freedom. In the story “A wall of fire is rising” the character guy wanted more to life and when he saw a hot air balloon he thought it was his chance for freedom. On page 77 there is an example of symbolism. “The boy was looking up trying to see if his father was really trying to jump out of the balloon...” well the balloon id the symbol in this story because his father wanted to be free in his last moments of freedom on that
