Clark - 1 Native American Sovereignty James R. Clark For literally thousands of years Indian tribes lived as sovereign nations and enjoyed all of the benefits of a people who controlled their own destinies. According to K. Kickingbird, L. Kickingbird, C. Chibitty and C. Berkey, all from the Institute for the Development of American Indian Law, these sovereign rights include: “1. The power to make and enforce laws, 2. The power to define and regulate the use of its territory, 3. The power to determine membership or citizenship, 4.
He was influential in creating the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions (FOTLU) where he served as vice president from 1881 – 1886. The FOTLU restructured in 1886 and became the American Federation of Labor (AFL). Gompers was voted president and was in the position for approximately 40 years. As a local and national leader, Gompers sought to build the labor movement into a force powerful enough to transform the economic, social and political status of America’s workers (AFL-CIO America's
People who expressed negative thoughts about Peter's decisions were often executed before they had a chance to gain followers and rebel against the Tsar. The Streltsy, bushy musketeers and pike men, Russia's first professional soldiers, were often found at the receiving end of harsh sentences[6]. Peter the Great was bad in that he was very cruel to the people of Russia. He heavily taxed everyone, so the serfs had to pay taxes for themselves and their owners. In
General Washington could be classified with multiple leadership styles including leadership by example, a transformational leader or even a servant leader. He is considered by many to be one of the most influential leaders of all time and certainly was one of our greatest presidents. Looking first at his leadership style of leading by example, he knew that he had to set the way for the people of the United States to follow for years after his presidency and establish a norm for how the country should be governed. He has high expectations of the young country, and it was said that he “…carried a vision into his presidency and sought to ensure a well-ordered government based on both laws and reason. He believed that through using reason and being open to various viewpoints, citizens could arrive at proper laws and policies to ensure peace, prosperity, and happiness for the country (McNeilly, 168).” Washington was intelligent enough to know the importance of a strong leader in the early years of this new country.
By: Chantel Vereen Although Benjamin Franklin has been dead for over 2 centuries, people are still enjoying the fruits of his labor. Franklin is considered to be the best scientist before Thomas Edison, as well as the greatest diplomat America has ever seen. He was an accomplished business man and a successful printer. He stood in the front ranks of the men who built the United States of America, as the only man who signed all four of these key documents in American history: The Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Alliance with France, the Treaty of Peace (with Great Britain), and the Constitution of the United States of America. .
Massive loss of lives from war, epidemic, disease, and murder led to a struggle to maintain the values that were drivers of the culture. Above internal issues was the arrival of white society which began to strategically break down the structure of Native American communities by targeting their political system. Another distraction at this time was the growth of alcohol in Native American society and it was a problem in many high ranked officials. Leaders such as Red Jacket, Hendrick Aupaumut, Young King, Logan, Skenandoa, and Handsome Lake were all notorious drunkards, which showed poor leadership and hostile environments. Drinking not only took a toll on leaders but also on the society as a whole because money for meats, vegetables, dry goods, and hardware was being spent on alcohol.
I also discussed who he is, what he did to become such a great leader, when did they became a leader, where leadership characteristics were shown, and why he is a leader. Washington knew how to take charge, keep his subordinates informed, and prepare clear, concise operation orders. George Washington has gone down in history being one of the greatest leaders that has lived, and made a huge impact on society as we know
The Cherokee Indians are the second largest tribe in the United States. With a population of around 200,000 tribal members, they practice many beliefs and rituals. Rituals are a set of actions, preformed mainly for their symbolic value. Most of these rituals and beliefs started many of years a go and have been passed along to present day. They start from the day a Cherokee is born to the day they pass away.
They testified that at first, “when the English first came the king’s father was a great man” (58), referring to Massasoit. However, he was followed by a series of cruel rulers. The English constantly ripped them off in trades and “led them into drunkenness” (58), causing some Indians to get violent and to give the English more reason to persecute them. This cycle of injustice towards the Indians led to Rhode Island’s slow demise. They chose to dominate the Indians instead of working with
Government policy attempted to destroy tribal culture and assimilate Indian people into mainstream culture with many negative results. The Ghost Dance represented a last attempt to resist American policies and practices. Throughout the nation, Indian tribes adjusted to their circumstances with mixed results. In 1871, the U.S government formally ended the treaty system, but not completely abolishing the sovereignty of Indian nations. Majority of Indian people lived in poverty and misery, deprived of their traditional means of survival and more often than not, subjected to fraud by corrupt government officials and private suppliers.
