Personal statement: Please introduce yourself to the Admissions Committee by writing a personal statement that will convey why you are a compelling candidate for our educational programs. The statement is your opportunity to tell us about yourself; it may address your career interests or goals, significant accomplishments or obstacles overcome, educational or professional achievements, or any way in which your perspective, viewpoint, or experiences will add to the richness of the educational environment of the Charles Koch Institute. [300 word limit] My name is Evan Shum, a current undergraduate junior studying Exercise Biology and a minor in Management Economics at the University of California, Davis. After spending a summer to audit a course on Competitive Strategy and spending another summer living in India, I changed the direction of my career from medical sciences towards helping others through economic development and policy. After completing my undergraduate studies, I will be pursuing a Masters in Applied Economics/Business Administration hopefully at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. I am writing to apply for the opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest minds working with the Charles Koch Institute. In India, my internship assignment was to apply technology to respond to the needs of TATA Capital and people living in rural India. We worked with a variety of NGOs and integrated business proposals through policy and economic analysis. The internship had taught me not only to tolerate ambiguity, but to embrace it. I learned to meet the assignments’ challenge with innovative perspectives and solutions. Moving to India had dragged me from my comfort zone to a place where I could push myself to adapt and thrive. In addition to my work experiences in India, I had the opportunity to create a startup project to support hungry students here
