History Research Paper February 21, 2013 Charles Darwin: Evolution “A man who dares to waste one hour of his time has not yet discovered the value of life.” said Charles Darwin. A man of discovery and rebel against his father’s expectation of him. Instead of being a physician, like his siblings and father, he was interesting in animals and organisms or the sorts. He was more involved in evolution. Charles Darwin went against his father’s hopes and dreams and collected and hunted animals. Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, United Kingdom. He has 4 other siblings, Marianne, Caroline, Susan and Erasmus. His father was a physician. In college he enjoyed during the summer time and or free time collecting insect and small animals so when he came back from this trip he was overwhelmed by the fossils, animals and plant specimens. He brought them back not only for him to study and observe but for other universities. The fossils showed some animals that are extinct. Having the fossils didn’t answer the questions as to why or how they became extinct. Some of the fossils were similar as to others on other islands and some were different. When his diary was published, he didn’t use the term “transmutations” which simply means a change in species. A knew form of geology called uniformitarianism emerged. Uniformitarianism meant that nature throughout time formed the earth. Mountains are formed slowly by erosion, slow forces that push together and go upward. Charles Lyell’s Principles of Geology was a book all about uniformitarianism that had the right time span needed for evolution to be proved.
