THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRLCE CHARACTER ANALYSIS Natella Abashwili She is tha wife to the late Governor, Georgi abashwilli. She is Michael’s bllod mother and the sister-in-law to the Fat ptince, Arsen Kazbezki. Natella’s role in the play Natella is the Governor’s selfish and heartless wife, who leaves her baby Michael behind, caring more about packing her dresses than saving her child. . She is jealous of the child (the Governor changes the palace for the son, not for her) and is obsessed with her clothes, unable to comprehend the danger, as she has lived a life of privilege. She treats the servants badly. After the civil war, she tries to get Michael back in order to reclaim the Governor’s estates. The judge Azdak rules against her because she is not as good for the child as Grusha is. She is used to highlight major themes in the play: Justice, Family, Class warefare and Religion. She symbolizes who neglect their children and are uncaring. In court, Natella’s notion of motherhood has to do with station. She only wants her son back so they can be restored to their estate. CHARACTER TRAITS Natella is selfish. Natella is portrayed as a very self-concerned selfish character. Her constant concern for her own needs and wants leads her to even dislike her own son for his father’s constant attention to him. On the day of the coup, she was busy packing her finest dresses and when she left she forgot her own son. In the future, she comes back for Michael, her son in order to get the estates he was to inherit. Natalla is mean. Natella is a woman who is generally mean to those who work for her and those not of her class. She repeatedly abuses the poor and shows no concern for the less fortunate. For instance, she talks to Arsen Kazbeki, her brother-in-law and says she is glad that the east wing of the palace is being extended which means getting rid of the
