1 INTRODUCTION 2 INDIVIDUAL PROJECT ANALYSIS 2.1 CHANNEL TUNNEL 2.1.1 Project Background The Channel Tunnel, also known as The Chunnel in England and as Le Tunnel Sous La Manche in France, is a subterranean rail system which crosses beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover between Folkestone in Great Britain and Coquelles in France. It is a 3 interconnected tunnel configuration rail system (shown in Fig. 1 below) which spans 50.5km one end to the other, with a 37.9km span under the water at an average depth of approximately 50m beneath water level. The Chunnel’s transportation (rolling stock includes) involves the Eurostar passenger trains, the vehicle transporting Eurotunnel shuttles, and the service and rescue vehicles. The conception of the Channel Tunnel actually dates back to the year 1802 when an undersea tunnel linking France and England was proposed by a French mining engineer named Albert Mathieu. Since then, multiple proposals have been made, some of which have actually had work done, but each was aborted due to a multitude of reasons including political and financial issues, and also Britains fear of invasion. The Chunnel is actually thought to be the 27th proposal for a link across the English Channel. The proposal for the link was in high demand from both countries to improve their relationships, for high speed transportation of passengers and vehicles, and to increase trading between Europe which would establish strong development between the two nations. In 1984, the British and French governments, by way of then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and French President Francois Mitterand, revisited the idea and after setting some common safety and environmental standards, they sent out a Request For Proposal (RFP).
