This essay will overview homelessness and the causes, critical issues that homeless people face in today’s society. Homelessness remains a particular problem among Australia's Indigenous people, who are over represented in their use of homeless services in all states and territories (Which Way Home? 2008: 20). In 2008 the Rudd Government set itself an ambitious target to ‘halve homelessness by 2020 and offer supported accommodation to all rough sleepers who need it’. (The Road Home 2008) It agreed to provide $6.1 Billion over 5 years from 2008-2009 on measures including social housing, assistance to people in the private rental market, support and accommodation for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and assistance with home purchasing. This is a community organisation that provides access for youth aged 12-25 years of age to services and programs. They also work in conjunction with TIME FOR YOUTH who are a non for profit youth agency serving Geelong, Colac, the South coast and Bellarine Peninsula. They provide a wide range of health a primary care services for young people and their families and also manage youth housing provided through houses and bungalows with access via Barwon Youth to further properties in Colac and Geelong. The writer has explained an overview of homelessness, what the causes and critical issues are, the policies and papers written by previous governments to help minimise homelessness. The writer also identified local services and programs available to help assist homeless people. The writer believes that homelessness is a worldwide issue that seems to be increasing for numerous reasons.
