Why do so many countries refuse or have difficulty in taking refugees? Ga Yoon Lee 'They do not treat us like humans, they treat us like animals', a refugee had mentioned('They Do Not Treat Us like Humans, They Treat Us like Animals). A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee their own country because of persecution, war, or violence. Because of the ongoing war around the world, the population of refugees and asylum seekers is increasing gradually("What Is a Refugee - USA for UNHCR."). Most of the countries initially had negative views towards the refugees and nearly all of them had rejected to take them or treated them ruthlessly. Essentially, if there are more and more refugees coming in, there will be social unrest which means that the social stability will go down. Since the refugees can’t get any jobs due to many barriers, they can not habituate well within the society. If refugees don’t have many skills to have a job, they will be economically unstable. This can later lead to a very serious problem; It could cause the increase of crime rates such as drug dealing, robbery, and terrors. Most of the Americans said that the United States should not accept any Syrian refugees into the country in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, siding with many Republican lawmakers and against the White House on the issue.("Most Americans Don’t Want U.S. to Accept Any Syrian Refugees: Poll." )But according to the demographics, countries like Germany, for instance, has a rapidly aging population so they are prone to welcome foreigners. ("This Map Helps Explain Why Some European Countries Reject Refugees, and Others Love Them.") However, one of the displeasing fact that happened after accepting the refugees was that the vast majority of sexual offenses were committed by men who were the majority of recent refugees arriving in Germany.("Refugees Responsible for Tiny Proportion of Sex Crimes in Germany despite Far-right Claims following Cologne Attacks." ) To add on, cultural differences are also one of the factors why countries are unwilling to receive refugees. Due to all of the terror arising in Islamic states, many individuals and countries were starting to get the Islamophobia. Due to Islamophobia, some of the cultures has been banned in certain countries. France, for example, was the first European country to ban the burqa since terrorists could hide their identity or weapons under the burqa. ("France’s Burka Ban Is a Victory for Tolerance.")
