Cause and effect Pearl Harbor The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise, but Japan and the United States had been edging toward war for decades. Throughout the war the United States had been growing increasingly distressed about the way Japan was treating China; they aided China but never officially got involved in the war. However, American citizens were having the time of their lives in the United States. The economy was excellent; people were making money, and spending it generously. No one expected the traumatic attack from all the way around the world. Hawaii is over 4,000 miles away from Japan, too far to really think about. Air fleets practiced and held maneuvers for over a year before they perfected their flying. The impossible task of dropping a torpedo into the shallow depths of Pearl Harbor with a short target range was made possible when the Japanese added wooden fins to the torpedos. they could accurately drop the deadly weapons on our ships. Their mission ordered from the people of America was to bomb Tokyo, the capital of Japan. This was a bold attack, but payback for Pearl Harbor. Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle personally volunteered to lead the raid himself, knowing it was possible to not come back. America had success in taking Japan by surprise; the thirteen bombers had dropped bombs on Tokyo’s industrial center. The plan after was to land in China because they barely had enough fuel. Some of the planes didn’t make it. Five men died and eight were captured. The Doolittle Raid had stunned the Japanese. They were forced to divert plans and weapons from the battle areas to homeland to protect them. Germany and Italy had also declared war against the United States. America was officially in World War II. Although the United States and Japan had bad intensions toward each other for quite a while, it took many events to build up that hatred and wish of destruction upon one another. The embargo, Tripartite Act, World War I all led to Pearl Harbor. And Pearl Harbor is what pushed America over the edge, what really put us down, into fear and anger to push us into World War II.
