The Mystery Hospital The Catcher in the Rye was written by J.D Salinger. Holden is the main character. He is walking all around New York because he is confused and has nowhere to go. He is a troublemaker and has a lying problem. He gets into many horrible conflicts and meets a lot of people. He is taken to a hospital at the end but it is not told what kind. At the end, it seems that Holden is in a mental hospital and I believe he exhibits many symptoms of A.D.P including impulsivity, deceitfulness, and consistent irresponsibility. The first symptom that Holden exhibits is impulsivity. He never tried to push himself in school. He flunked out of many schools and did not care. He was different from his brothers D.B and Allie. He even noticed it himself. He said, “My brother D.B is a writer and all, my brother Allie, the one that died, that I told you about, was a wizard. I'm the only really dumb one.” (Salinger 67) He could not think about where to go or what to do in life. The second symptom that Holden exhibits is deceitfulness. Everyone that knows Holden should know that he is a big liar. Holden even said that he is the biggest liar in the world. He began talking to a lady that came on the train. They both were kicked out of many schools. Salinger dropped out of NYU and moved to Vienna, Austria. He worked at a meatpacking business because he took his father’s, Sol, advice to work there. Salinger decided to go off to war in 1942. After the war, he suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome. Just like Holden, he was checked into a hospital. But Salinger was checked into a mental institution. Holden may be suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome like Salinger. This may lead to Holden being in a mental hospital.
