Retain, Release, Refer Nicole Perez May 12, 2012 BSHS/322 Jean Holtz In the human service field there are many issues that are being presented. As a manager of the human service workers, the manager not only helps clinicians assist their client but they help the clinician as well. In this paper the manager will show different scenarios with different situations. There are different ways to handle these situations. The first would be to retain the clinician. The second would be to release the clinician if their situation requires this. The reasoning for releasing a clinician would be because they may have broken company policy and they have no other choice than to release them. She is employed with this agency as a child and family counselor. During her time at this agency she has shown to have good therapeutic skills. Her clients’ records have shown that her clients are very fond of her. It has been noticed that she has not been completing and submitting her client case logs in a timely manner. This will be reviewed with her since she will be retained. Janice states that she does not always feel confident and have as much knowledge about some of the situations that she encounters. She also says that she is more at ease working with children rather than family sessions. Since she is newer to the agency, it will be explained to her the importance of keeping her client records up to date. She will need to review the legal requirements of keeping these records up to date. As a counselor it is important for her to stay consistent with the Code of Conduct (Bemister and Dobson 2011). If she does not stay on top of updating her client case files then adequate services may not be provided. Since Janice is rather new to being a counselor we can find the areas where she is uncomfortable and offer her training classes to help her become more comfortable. We will let her know that there is an open line of communication so if she ever feels uncomfortable or needs assistance on something that she does not feel knowledgeable or confident about then she can always go to a supervisor’s office. She will also be offered personal therapy to make her feel more comfortable and confident in her own sessions. Personal therapy should help benefit her in her personal and professional life (Oteiza 2010). Her personal therapy sessions should help her become more comfortable working with families instead of just children.
