The Big Data Challenges Walter Clay Strayer University Abstract The Volvo Car Corporation is a well-known car manufacturing company that was founded in 1927 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Today it produces some of the safest vehicles on the road. The Volvo Car Corporation separated from the Ford Motor Company in 2010. When they separated they decided to develop their own information technology infrastructure that would allow them to be one of the safest car companies on the road today. Over the course of this paper I will look at how the Volvo Car Corporation integrated cloud capabilities into their networks, then I will explain how they transformed the data they collected into the knowledge to develop safer vehicles. I will identify some of the real-time information systems they implemented and evaluate those systems impacts. Finally, I will show how the implementation of a Big Data strategy has given the Volvo Car Corporation a competitive advantage in the automotive industry. The Big Data Challenges “Judge how Volvo Car Corporation integrated the cloud infrastructure into their networks.” The key to the Volvo Car Corporation (Volvo) having the ability to integrate the cloud into their networks is the vehicles they develop. Volvo has developed vehicles that are connected data collectors. With the multiple sensors and CPUs embedded in their vehicles, Volvo is able to collect terabytes of data and transfer it back to the manufacturer via the cloud. They also collect data from their customer relationship management systems and transfer it back to the manufacturer via the cloud. Once all of this Big Data is transferred to the Volvo Data Warehouses for long-term storage. This Big Data is them processed and analyzed and accessed by Volvo’s employees to improve upon whatever their part is in the company’s production process. Above all, the Big Data is critical to Volvo
