Fact 7 Obstetric fistula still exists because health care systems fail to provide accessible, quality maternal health care, including family planning, skilled care at birth, basic and comprehensive emergency obstetric care, and affordable treatment of fistula. Fact 8 In 2008 over 2000 health professionals were trained in preventing and managing obstetric fistula. Fact 9 Patients with uncomplicated fistulae can undergo a simple surgery to repair the hole in their bladder or rectum. The treatment cures up to 90% of obstetric fistula patients. However, since 2003 only 12 000 women in over 45 countries have received obstetric fistula treatment in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer, with nearly 90% of patients dying within 2 years of diagnosis, in large part because it tends to be diagnosed late (Gulyn and Youssef, 2010). Signs and Symptoms Initial presentation of lung cancer, regardless of gender, tend to be nonspecific, as a chronic or new cough in 65% to 75% of cases, with 25% or more having a productive cough (Yoder, 2006). Since lung cancer often occurs in central airways it can also present as pneumonia and lymph enlargement; hemoptysis will occur in 20% to 30% of patients. Other symptoms include dyspnea , with 60% of patients developing it early and 65% developing it at some time during their illness (Yoder, 2006). About 50% of patients present initially with chest pain (Yoder, 2006).
Cervical cancer kills 4,000 women each year in the U.S. 90% of the cases of cervical cancer are attributable to the HPV virus. Why should we say no to a vaccine that can protect our children from a deadly disease? All girls between the ages of 9 to 14 years of age should be given the HPV vaccine. There are two (2) HPV vaccines, namely Gardasil and Cervarix. These vaccines prevent four (4) different types of HPV which together cause most cases of cervical cancer and genital warts.
The rate of infection did decrease substantially in the shaved patients if the shaving was done at the time of surgery rather than the customary day prior. Each of the article cited years’ worth of data collection in studies around the world with thousands of patient’s total. In all of the articles they noted that the resistance to changing this procedure is due to custom and practice (Prevention of Surgical Site Infections n.d.). 4. Based upon a review of the literature, if the practice of shaving was eliminated in totality or at least substituted with clipping in more hospitals, the incidence of
A 2004, article written by Brian Handwerk on NationalGeographic.com he states, “In 2002 U.S. doctors performed 24,900 lifesaving organ transplants. That's the good news. But for every person lucky enough to receive a transplant, two others are added to a waiting list that now features more than 80,000 people in the U.S. alone. As desperation grows so may an illicit trade in human organs in much of the developing world.” To show us how many people in the U.S. alone need these types of organ transplants, and that it is a very long difficult process go through and find an exact matching donor. Since the demand is very high many have attempted to profit by selling organs such as kidneys, obtained from living donors tempted to give up their "spare" organs for cash.
Erin Gallagher and Natalie Lukehart Gallagher and Lukehart 1 Mrs. Greenwald Pre-IB English 10 9 March 2012 Organ Selling In the United States, there are now “…more than 105,000 people on the waiting list for solid organ transplants” (Womens Health), yet the list of donors is just a fraction of that amount. This is a controversial issue that has not only risen throughout the nation; but world-wide. Those for organ selling may argue that it saves lives, while those who are against organ selling argue that it is unethical. The black market for selling organs does exist, but what if potential donors were given incentives in a reputable commercial market: a thousand dollars for a kidney or two thousand for a heart? Would this be ethical?
Hospitals and nursing homes are the top two workplaces for days away from work due to back injuries. About 12 percent of nurses leave the profession annually because of back injuries which just adds to the nurse shortages. The primary risk factor for low back disorders among nursing personnel is lifting and transferring of patients. Nurses should adhere to a ‘No Lift’ approach and prior to commencing any transfer the nurses should consult the appropriate patient mobility plan to determine the
Critical Incident Medication Errors Seth Molin December 14, 2013 HMGT 320 University of Maryland University College Professor Ben Smith Medication errors are a dangerous and costly event. It is estimated that 1 million medication errors happen each year. Additionally, it is estimated that these errors result in approximately 7,000 unnecessary deaths (Binder, L., 2013, September 3). Jeannell Mansur from the Joint Commission International illustrated that “every hospital patient may be subjected to as much as one medication error each day.” In addition to the risk to patient safety these errors produce additional medical costs of an estimated 3.5 billion dollars a year. It is vital that steps be taken to mitigate this preventable critical incident.
188 hysterectomies were said to have been carried out by Neary and his colleagues between the years 1973 and 1998. This represented an alarming rate of one hysterectomy per 282 caesarean deliveries. This rate was ten times higher than other maternity units which the inquiry found, corresponded generally to international levels (Clark 2006). The majority of those who were involved or witnessed the removal of wombs did not act upon it. The investigation found that during Neary’s career; fellow colleagues, patients, their families, junior doctors, anaesthetists, surgical nurses, midwives, pathologists
An estimated of 40-50 million abortions occur annually, and worst, about half in unsafe circumstances, according to information given by World Health Organization; global data prove that about 13% of all maternal deaths are due to complications of unsafe abortions, in addition to the 70,000 women who die each year, a high percentage suffer long-term consequences, including infertility. But these results can’t be attributed to the myth that says abortion endangers the mother’s life, in fact the procedures and techniques to end a pregnancy in an early stage are simple and safe but when they are made by well-trained health-care professionals with a proper equipment, proper techniques and sanitary standards. In these cases abortion is considered one of the less risky medical procedures. The risk begins when the woman does it in
