What Can a Teacher Do to Settle the Newcomers at School?

The 1st of September is one of the most exciting holidays in the year. All students who study at school or university return from their long summer holidays, meet their friends, exchange fresh impressions and get to know all the news. This day means for all of them the beginning of new tiresome studying year, during which they’ll certainly read a lot of books, write much essays and take exams. In any case, it’s not so difficult to get used to new studies and subjects if you are a second year student or pupil of the tenth form. But if the child come to school for the first time, standing hand in hand with his mother and trembling with amazement and obscurity, it will be very hard to settle at school, because everything around him is absolutely new. The child observes new surroundings and, of course, he meets many unknown people – his classmates and teachers, and I must admit that the role of teaching stuff is the most important in developing his personality. In this period of time they should point out that school is their second home and teachers are their second parents. That is why the first teacher must create an atmosphere of total understanding between every newcomer and show a true concern. The teacher should also keep in mind that the child’s psyche during this period of time is very liable to detrimental effects from the direction of surrounding world and even his classmates as well. So he should pay much attention to the development of relations in children’s group: try to participate their discussions, convince the group the idea that every member of it is a real personality and everybody should respect each other. The teacher should also keep in mind that strict rules in behavior and high requirements to children can provoke disrespect from the outside them.
