BUSINESS ADVANTAGE THROUGH E-COMMERCE E-commerce BRINGS THE UNIVERSAL ACCESS OF THE Internet to the core business processes of buying and selling goods and services. It helps generate demand for products and services and improves order management, payment and other other support functions. It is increasingly evident that IT is a key enabler for increasing productivity (Bharadwaj at el 1998). It is much more than an Internet-based phenomenon. Rather, E-commerce is a restructuring of the very basis for conducting business. Unlike so many other business developments in the past, E-commerce is not an opportunity for only the large or multinational firms. Rather, the smallest entrepreneurial organizations can establish and build their businesses around E-commerce. As they do so, geographic distance disappears as a business barrier, for the global reach of underlying communications technologies becomes an easily accessible resource for all firms. The findings indicate that e-commerce benefits are, by and large, limited to improvements in intra- and interorganizational communications. More strategic benefits relating to market access, customer/supplier linkages or cost savings were not found in the majority (more than 80%) of organizations surveyed. Electronic business today plays a major role in the world's economic growth, thanks to the rapid advance in information technology. The value of E-commerce in the United States and Europe is increasing at a very fast pace & it is reaching many trillion. There have been many spectacular E-business successes, but there have also been numerous failures. E- Commerce system capitalizing on a new opportunity to create a product, delivers a service, or get in touch with potential customers. The public, global Internet, and its principle application, the World Wide Web, provide a highly visible platform for electronic markets.
