Shirley ENG 110 Project 4 draft 3 Oct 28th 2012 Bullied Children Receive Plastic Surgery from Non-profit Organizations Many researches show that children with physical defects especially facial differences are more likely to be bullied or teased in schools. Due to that, many children with support of their parents are receiving to plastic surgery from non-profit organizations. Study This section we focus on a study carried out in Philippines. Actually, much previous evidence reveals that children with physical defects often suffer from hostility, rejection, taunts from their peers. Consequently, they receive negative treatment and have low self-esteem, which may lead to an all-life risk of social interaction and adjustment problems. This study was designed to assess children’s attitudes toward visible physical impairment. The participants were made up of 122 children both with and without craniofacial anomalies. Both girls and boys at the age of 8 and 12 were selected. 54 children with physical defects make the facial group (FG) while 68 children without physical defects make the control group (CG). Also, 54 parents of children with clefts of lips or palate were interviewed. Each group was interviewed on their playmate preference and frequency of contact with the disabled. The results were within most people’s expectation. No matter in which group, the child without disability is selected as first to play with. In FG, girls show lower preference for obesity and higher preference for arm-hand deformity. Boy, however, turned out the opposite. The fact was that both sexes reported a higher preference for facial difference compared with the American normative standard. In CG, few sex differences exist. FG was subdivided into smaller groups, for example, those who had a previous plastic surgery and those who didn’t. Results showed that those who had
