Computer business systems have been around for 40 years. Desktop computers have been around for 20 years. Why do business systems, in general, still need more development? o Please respond to Question 1 no later than Saturday, Day 5. There are many reasons why there needs to be constant development of new systems. One major issue is hardware compatibility. As hardware ages and needs replacing the software may not be compatible with the new system. An example of this where I work is in a high speed camera system. While it is not a business system it provides and excellent example. The individual video processing computers are 1U rack mount computers. The companies software runs on Windows 95. The problem is when we have a failed motherboard you cannot replace it with a modern spare because Windows 95 doesn't know what USB, AGP, or SATA are. In this case we are faced with implementing new software or buying motherboards from ebay. A second concern with business systems is that the nature of business changes and the older systems may not accommodate these changes. These could include regulation and legislation changes such as Sarbanes Oxley. Also an older system may not be able to take advantage of changes in the way products or marketed such as Web 2.0 applications. Also with companies moving a major part of their manufacturing overseas this could involve systems that are capable of integrating more extranet capabilities. Lastly, with companies merging constantly the potential of having an mix of older technologies that do not interface well with each other can be a reason to develop new systems. At our company we became part of ABB in the 90's but we were bought out by Combustion Engineering before that.
