He knows that he should not turn in Jim because Jim has done nothing but help Huck in his adventure and has done nothing wrong to Huck. Huck’s development is shown here because he knows that what society views slaves as is wrong. They are best friends, which is why Huck cannot bring himself to turn Jim in. The events at the end of the book test the love and Janie must prove her dedication to TeaCake to end his miserable rabid state, Janie feels the wrath of the ‘boys’ from the back of the courtroom. They forgive her later, however, when they realize that what she did was best and that she truly lives TeaCake. Janie’s decision to return to Eatonville with her newfound selfhood shows the solidarity that she feels with the black community and the words of Mrs. Turner made her forget her white lineage and love her blackness. Janie’s to selfhood is also a journey through the varying lifestyles and communities of the thriving African American culture. Thus, Pearl’s existence gives her mother reason to live, bolstering her spirits when she is tempted to give up; acting as a hero who constantly saves her mother from the tortures of Puritan society. However, Pearl also acts as a constant remaindered to her mother of her inescapable sin, and therefore can also be seen as a non-heroic character. Throughout the novel Pearl constantly defends her mother when people of their community are threatening her. When Hester and Pearl are attacked by a group of children, who try to fling mud at them Pearl becomes angry. She frightens the children off and she throws rocks at them.

Not only does she try to impress everyone with her appearance but she also goes along with Char, and gets in trouble because she has no ability to say no and walk away. Maleeka takes the blame at first, but towards the end of the novel she gets her courage and tells on Char. She finally finds herself and realizes she is beautiful without Chars expensive clothing. She also realized she doesn’t need to stick out; she just needs to be herself. In the end Maleeka and Caleb are backed together and Maleeka is friends with Miss Saunders.

When Josie found out Marcus Standford was her real grandfather Josie despised Nonna and hated her for it “I hate you, Not because of my life But because of my mother's” (P218) She is angry that Nonna abandoned Christina because she got pregnant and the father was unknown but at the same time Nonna had done the same. Although she know it’s true she does it, because Bethan her popular but bad mannered best friend does it, and had told her that it keeps you skinny.
