Both The Notebook and Splendor In the Glass tell the passionate tale of young, intense love. In both films, the lovers face the obstacle of class conflict. In The Notebook, Allie faces the extreme difference between her rich, southern lifestyle and Noah’s destitute life at the lumberyard. Similarly, Bud faces the difference between the esteemed lifestyle his father has built and is determined to maintain and the lifestyle Bud wants for himself and Deanie. Although both Allie and Bud struggle with their parents’ disapproval of class difference, Allie is more successful in overcoming the pressure from her parents due to her stubbornness, passion, and her mother’s ultimate understanding. In The Notebook, Allie’s stubbornness is one of her most dominant traits. Throughout the film, she is portrayed as a “rich and studious go-getter with the world at her feet” (Schrager 1). This characteristic ultimately helps Allie overcome the burden of class conflict and enables her to be truly happy with Noah. When Allie falls in love, she refuses to acknowledge the class conflict between her and Noah. She spends time with him at his old cottage, rides in his beat-up truck, and visits him at the lumberyard. The class difference between her lifestyle and Noah’s never fazes her as she travels “down a very long road with no regard for the consequences” (Cassavetes). Allie’s stubbornness to acknowledge this difference enables her to be happy with Noah no matter how large the class conflict is. Similar to Allie, Bud, from Splendor In the Grass, does not care about the class difference between him and Deanie. He loves Deanie even though his father continues to remind him that Deanie “represents the town’s middle class” (Henderson 1).
